Epson XP-760 Scan error -9923

When I try to use either Image capture or the scan button in the System Preferences, Printer dialogue I get the message unable to communicate with the scanner (-9923). Epson own scanner software will see and use the scanner but not the native OS X software.

I need this as I use some PDF OCR software, as the poor Epson software fails to OCR the PDF files it generates.

I connect the XP-760 printer/scanner via Wi-Fi but the same occurs even if connected by Ethernet.

Epson support does not want to know!
