iOS 10 Black Screen Spinning Wheel

Been using iOS 10.0.1 for about a week on an iPhone 6 and it's buggy. The issues below have only occurred since upgrading to iOS 10. Please fix in next release or provide solution.

1. Random black screen with spinning wheel. The upgrade went fine, so not that black screen. But at least daily my phone becomes unresponsive and shows a black screen with spinning wheel. After 5-10 seconds I'm prompted to enter my passcode as if the device has restarted. I'm not the only person experiencing this - and even managed to capture the image below.

2 - I've enabled the 'rest finger to open' option under home screen accessibility, but this doesn't always work. Again, about once a day, resting my finger to open results in me being prompted to press the home button to unlock. Each time this has happened I've checked and confirmed that the 'rest finger to open' option was enabled.

Hey everyone! So I had this same issue. Every time my 6 auto locked or I locked it, I would have to keep pressing the home button to get it to unlock. Backed up my phone on my MBP and then re-installed iOS 10.0.2 -- problem solved! I restored my phone from my back-up and the problem returned shortly after all my apps were re-installed which made me think one of the 200 apps on my phone is causing a problem. I went through one-by-one starting with emoji apps and voila! The app causing this problem was the Emoji Xpress app. Hope everyone has the same luck as I do!

Yesterday I uninstalled the Outlook app due to the fact that I started to suspect it might cause this behaviour, too. It regularly happened when I was using the app, up to the point where it's almost reproducible. Since it also runs in the background, random crashes when I was using other apps (and also when the phone was locked and just lying on the table) could therefore be linked to Outlook from my point of view. A general memory leak could also be an explanation, of course. But then it should affect all iOS 10 users, shouldn't it?

However, I'm only referring to the first problem the OP mentioned: sudden black screen with white spinning wheel and after approximately 10 seconds the "Touch ID or Enter Passcode" screen. Some people here seem to have a somewhat different issue...

I opened this thread and finally have a solution that's worked for for me. It's a factory reset but initially don't do this via Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content & Settings. Instead, follow the instructions to 'Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings', in particular steps 5, 6 & 7 under 'Restore your device to factory settings'. Of course make sure you backup before proceeding.

The process downloads and installs a clean version of the latest iOS. When your iPhone restarts, avoid the temptation to select 'Restore from iCloud Backup' (or iTunes). Instead, 'Setup as New iPhone'. Think of it as a clean install of iOS 10.0.2, as opposed to one that's gone through several updates. You can then test things out for as long or short as you want to confirm the problem doesn't recur (I went for 24 hours).

Assuming that works you'll of course want your data and settings back. Only then use Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content & Settings. But this time, when your iPhone restarts select 'Restore from iCloud Backup' (or iTunes). You should then be free from the black screen spinning wheel. Hope this works for you all.

Thanks to Amanda at Apple for working with me over time and eventually convincing me to try out these steps.

Well the problem for me on iPhone 6 seems pretty obvious now. iOS 9 was solid with outlook installed. And the deadly wheel spin started happening right after iOS 10 updates. It last for about several weeks now with around 5 black screen spins per day. Just for the sake of it I uninstalled outlook and there has been no spin wheels for more than a week now.

It really seems there is something wrong here in between iOS 10 and outlook. iOS 9 was solid but once one 10 it started happening. Really not sure who to blame here, while outlook can cause this issue but iOS itself should be able to manage the situation.

If I still have a change I would rollback to iOS 9 until this gets resolved.

Hello,

Just wanted to add my two cents to this on what has worked for me so far. It might help other folks.

The two apps I had that created this crashing scenario were Outlook and Habitify. Uninstalling either of these would rectify the problem. However, it seemed more like an OS issue. I stumbled across another post (I can't remember where) that suggested turning off iCloud for Notes, then turning it back on so that it can resync. Instead I did it for all the iCloud services (mail, reminder, etc). This helped resolve the problem.

Another thing that the Outlook team suggested was to reset the Outlook account settings under Outlook > settings > accounts > reset account. This seemed to work as well but I'm not sure if it was coincidental.

Anyhow. I'm happy to report that I have had no crashes for several days and I can use both of the apps listed above. Hope this may help somebody if your scenario fits mine exactly.

Hi folks! I believe I may have a solution to our problem of the black screen with the spinning circle.

I've stumbled upon this post today because my brand new iPhone 7 (which I have upgraded to the latest ios) also got stuck on a black screen with the spinning circle. I was trying to update some of my apps, when the screen suddenly froze. I clicked the home button once, and the screen became black with the subsequent appearance of the spinning circle.

I tried everything - pressed simultaneously the home and power button (did not work); connected it to itunes to do a restore (it won't let me because my "Find my iPhone" was turned on - but I couldn't turn it off because my phone was unresponsive).

Anyway, a very helpful Mr. Damon (a senior advisor from Apple) helped me via chat to resolve the problem.

Here's what I did:

1. Make sure your iPhone is unplugged from the socket or the computer.

2. Hold down the POWER button plus the VOLUME DOWN button SIMULTANEOUSLY. If it works, the screen should power off almost immediately.

3. Connect your iPhone to the computer. (when I connected to the computer, my iPhone automatically turned on and was ready to be used again).

The subsequent steps below are for those whose iPhones did not turn on with the above steps. The following steps are designed for you to be able to remotely turn off your "Find my iPhone", so you can do a manual restore from iTunes.

4. Go to www.icloud.com.

5. Click Find iPhone

6. Since the phone is powered off already, it won't be able to locate it. Click DEVICES on the upper bar.

7. Click your iPhone.

8. Click "remove from account".

9. Go to your itunes, and do a restore.

I did not have to do steps 4-9 anymore, because as I have mentioned, my iPhone automatically turned on after step 3.

This really worked for me. Hope it works for everyone else too! Have a great day!

So I removed Outlook from my phone and everything has been good so far. However, I'm still seeing crashing on my iPad. I checked the logs and saw some references to the Agenda Widget.

I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the issue at hand but wanted to share.
