Canon printer drivers in Sierra

Hey Guys,

Just reporting issues with the Canon Pixma printer line. Since upgrading to Sierra, PNG files with transparent backgrounds are printing with issues. They are usually stretched and appear to have a weird mask spread across them. Sometimes, the printer queue just errors out and doesn't print the PNG at all. I have tested this with multiple PNGs and Multiple computers. Sierra Macs printing to my Canon inkjet all print with this PNG problem. Same computers printing the same PNGs to HP or Epson printers work fine. So far, the Canons print TIFFs and PSDs just fine.

I am pretty confident this is a Canon printer driver issue.

Tried a reset yet?

Open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners then select the Printers tab then right or control click the printer on the left then click: Reset printing system

Well, seems I spoke too soon with my last post - thought I would just try and print a couple of photos that previously gave the "Filter failed" error message (and guess what) all worked fine. Now I am still using the Canon supplied drivers because as said previously they (and not Apple's pre baked in ones) allow direct to CD printing, but whatever has happened the latest Sierra 10.12.1 update appears to have fixed the issue (for me) without resorting to any updates from Canon!

If this is the case (will need to see how things go on more prints to be certain) the issue might not have been down to the print driver, but related to other areas of the OS instead - we might owe Canon an apology.

For those waiting on Canon for a fix, would suggest after applying Sierra update 10.12.1 to give it a go and see if your issue has been resolved.

Well, looks like Canon US and UK sites are starting to post driver updates for Sierra, on quick viewing the driver version seems the same across a range of Mac OS's (10.7.5, 10.8.5, 10.9, 10.10, 10.11, and 10.12.1) so doesn't appear they have done anything specific for Sierra - may be Apple's latest update 10.12.1 was the real fix and Canon's is just a general update across the range.

For info, I run MG7150 (UK model) and the latest driver is now v16.10.0.0 (which is the same as that on the US site) - below is taken from Canon's web page:

So, with luck all should be sorted on the printing front for those having the print error message.

I have had the same "Filter" problem. The release of the 10.12.1 Sierra update did not solved the problem.

The real problem is, that Canon do not support older printers (mine is a S820) anymore.

My printer is USB connected on my Airport Extreme in my network.

My problem was solved by downloading the latest printer drivers from the guys of Gutenprint.

I have installed Gutenprint 5.2.12-pre4 DMG

I did a new install of the printer and used the Gutenprint 5.2.12-pre4 driver.

Everything is working fine, and I now have an outdated (but still good working) network printer.
