The Sierra update instruction states: "If you’re running Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and your Mac supports macOS Sierra, you will need to upgrade to El Capitan first. Click here for instructions." Nevertheless, there's no link to follow... How can I get a El Capitan installation if it's not available anymore in the AppStore for my 2011 MacBookPro.

Works in other countries, too, at least in Spain. Thanks a lot for the effort... so doing El Capitan and waiting for the first or second system update for Sierra.

I tend to wait until at least a .1 release, sometimes a few more, depending on the amount of problems reported in the Sierra forum and if it is from the software they run vs features I want to have (multiple monitors, external devices, VPN, etc...).
If you at least download El Capitan and then "Quit" the installer, you will have the Applications -> Install OS X El Capitan installer available to do the upgrade just before you install Sierra. In other words, you can have a choice of installing now or installing later.

I tried your suggestion but when I run update it says my system is up to date. I have 10.6.8 from 2010.
After much thought I finally figured this one out. I don't use passwords on my own computer.
