Mouse problems with display port 1.2 in MST (4K display)

With macOS Sierra, there is strange thing with 4K display connected via DisplayPort in DP 1.2 MST mode (required for 60Hz refresh rate).

As the screen is split into two sub screens in this mode - mouse behaved differently on every half of the screen. It seems that right side of the screen has mouse offset of around 50 pixels.

With standard DP 1.1 mode there is no such phenomenon.

So far the workaround which works best for me is to, start up the Macbook open with external screen attached. After you here the booting sound you can close the Macbook screen and work on your external screen.

As long as your Macbook doesn't got to sleep or you restart while its closed, the mouse cursor issue doesn't seem to appear.

Its not a perfect solution but its easier than going back to El Capitan for me.

However so far I found that the GT750M on my Macbook Pro 15" Retina Late 2013 in High Sierra seems not performing proper, especially something like Adobe Premiere CC is painfully slow, which I suppose has something to do that e.g. CUDA drivers are not out yet from Nvidia for High Sierra.

Hi Pawal Guraj,

I understand that your mouse functions differently when using it on the right side of your Dell external display. You can try adjusting the display settings of your System's preferences and also checking your Display accessibility settings.

I would also reset the NVRAM. How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac

What is NVRAM?
A small amount of your computer’s memory, called “non-volatile random-access memory” or NVRAM, stores certain settings in a location that OS X can access quickly. The settings that are stored in NVRAM depend on the type of Mac you're using, and the types of devices connected to it.

If none of the above resolves the issue, try booting the Mac up into Safe Mode to see if the problem exists there. Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up

What is safe mode?
Safe mode (sometimes called safe boot) is a way to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks, and prevents some software from automatically loading or opening. Starting your Mac in safe mode does the following:
Verifies your startup disk, and attempts to repair directory issues if needed
Loads only required kernel extensions
Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
Disables user-installed fonts
Deletes font caches, Kernel cache and other system cache files
Together, these changes can help resolve or isolate issues related to your startup disk.

These steps should have your mouse operating as it should while using your external display in Mac OS Sierra. Thanks for using Apple Support Communities to post your question.

Have a nice day.

Hi, I've tired the options, but the problem remains. It is not any setting dependent. When Mac is booted with monitor connected it is ok, but randomly - sometimes after locking the screen and unlocking again the problem appears.

It is only when monitor is using DP 1.2 with 60Hz. When display is switched to DP 1.1 with 30Hz everything works correctly.

Hi,

I've the same problem here, like Pawel with an external DELL UP2414Q connected via DisplayPort 1.2 to a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, mid 2014) running macOS Sierra 10.12.

I used it all the time with OS X Yosemite and El Capitan with DP 1.2 60Hz. After I'd upgraded to macOS Sierra last week, I faced problems with the mouse. The cursor shape often was not fitting to it's position, for example meaning it was the "normal" arrow shape although it was above the right border of Mail's window, where it has to be the double left-right arrow indicating that the window can be resized. Moving the mouse out of Mail's window (more to the right) ended up with the resize shape some pixels right of the window, where click and hold enabled me to resize the window.

I had these problems with other macOS applications and with Windows 10 running on Parallels. They occured from time to time and they disappeared without changing anything. But for me as a developer the system was useless, because I was no longer able to design GUI elements or simple work with drag and drop.

After I read Pawel's initial message here I switched the DELL display to DP 1.1 two days ago and since then the problem has gone. So there seems to be an issue with Sierra and at least these DELL displays.

Anyone with an idea? Would be great to work with 60 Hz again, because animations are awful in 30 Hz.

Hi Lars,

I have exactly the same symptoms as You. There is no way to use mouse with those bugs.

I think this is problem not only with that DELL display but with any using DP 1.2. In DP 1.2 mode whole screen is treated as 2 separate screens (left and right half). Its obviously some problem in Sierra with handling mouse movements between those two screens.

I guess Sierra has new graphical engine and drivers - so this is probably a bug somewhere in the driver.

I wonder if there is anyone other using external monitor with DP 1.2 (4K@60Hz) and has the same symptoms.

Hi alfeel,

the PRAM reset is no help, isn't it? I tried it today, too, and switched the Dell UP2414Q back to DP 1.2, but only a few minutes later I'd the same problem with the mouse again. So, back to DP 1.1 and now everything's fine for a couple of hours.

Still searching for a solution to use DP 1.2 with macOS Sierra and this display…

Regards, Lars

+1

Same monitor here, same macOs version.

Sometimes when I turn the display off and on (with macOs already up), and switch the resolution to the highest (native 4k) then go back to scaled (I use 2560x1440), the mouse position get fixed, still get some issues with wrong pointer icons, but at least I can work.

I have to do it every time I restart the system.

I'm using an logitech g502 and I did installed it's software, not sure if this has anything to do with it.

Got the exact same Dell UP3214Q, displayport 1.2 enabled running at 4k and resolution 3840x2160 at 60hz, and like the rest of the users here I have problems with the mouse pointer, it can be stuck in a pointer image that doesn't correspond to the action (a text select cursor pointer when I'm hovering a button for example), and when the pointer does change it sometimes jump offsetting itself.
