Mouse problems with display port 1.2 in MST (4K display)

With macOS Sierra, there is strange thing with 4K display connected via DisplayPort in DP 1.2 MST mode (required for 60Hz refresh rate).

As the screen is split into two sub screens in this mode - mouse behaved differently on every half of the screen. It seems that right side of the screen has mouse offset of around 50 pixels.

With standard DP 1.1 mode there is no such phenomenon.

My hardware is: MacBook Pro 15" Late 2013, display: DELL UP2414Q

After having seen the problem present itself when using the external display as the sole display, and with it being used in conjunction with the laptop's display, I had sort of given up on one or the other being a potential "fix". Today's discussion has lead me to think that vitaligent is onto something here. I started off the day using both displays today and had the normal headache with this bug (photo editing is dam near impossible on the RHS of the external display); simply closing the MBP remedied the issue, at least for the past few hours. If/when it returns I'm going to continue to try to reset the display server by opening/closing the laptop while leaving the external display running. After a day or two of use, I hope to have something definitive to report on this potential work-around.

Same problem for me, using MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, mid 2014) running macOS Sierra 10.12 in clamshell mode in a vertical Henge Dock, making opening/closing the lid impossible (except different monitor, Dell UP2715K, 5K@60Hz, using 2 DP cables). I guess we can only hope Apple is going to fix it, as I tried many different things with no success.

Hey I'm also looking at a $3000 MBP 15" 1TB purchase but want to know if the stuff I already have will work with it. I need MST working in macOS. I know it works in bootcamp Windows from my research, the hardware supports it.

I have three Dell U2414H LCDs (support DP1.2/MST hubs built-in). Does anyone know if I can daisychain over MST using a 2016 MBP? There's just too many dongles needed otherwise.

If so, I'll be buying my first Mac ever. I had a Commodore in the 80s!

Thanks.

10.12.2 is out and this is still not fixed... drives me crazy.

Some people found a link between Adobe CC being installed or updates, I have found no such link. It did this from the very start of a clean 10.12 Install. Mouse drivers (I use a Logitech) also have no influence on this, as have custom graphics drivers. I have a late 2013 MBP with Nvidia and it did this with and without Cuda installed.

This issue seems to affect all MacBook Pros with discrete graphics (AMD or Nvidia) running any kind of MST display (4K, 5K). It usually comes back after sleep, no matter what temporary "fix" you apply. It affects the RIGHT side of the MST display, that's why moving across the vertical middle the cursor changes. The Left side is always ok.

Sometimes, after waking from sleep the image comes up on the external display and then it shuts off for a second or two and then it comes back. Looks like macOS is resetting something. In this case all is good.

Switching between My monitor's profile (Dell UP3214Q) and Adobe RGB "fixes" this until next wake from sleep.

Thanks!

In my case Adobe CC makes the problem appear less frequently, but it appears after some time.

Enabling screen saver in most cases solves problem for some time.

I guess that changing color profile or enabling screen saver simply resets the graphics engine, so the problem goes away for a while.

Apple is now selling LG 5K display using Thunderbolt 3, probably not fixing the problem with existing 4K displays means they want us to buy it...

It seems that the problem became more random after the update, but it still present more than not. And it happens on a 5K display as well (as my case). exactly as experienced by all of us. I tried the "color profile change" and "screen saver" approaches to solve it (at least temporarily) but it's completely random. Bottom line is: there is not clear workaround and no solution yet.

You need a bootable USB with El Capitan (it's a bit tricky to find an installer, but not impossible). Then reboot your macbook while holding the Option key, thus having the possibility to choose the USB key as the startup disk. Wipe your hard drive clean and do a fresh install. Don't forget to copy all of your documents before that 🙂 I don't know if Time Machine can help you when downgrading.
