Q: Cell Data Usage after upgrading to iOS 10.0.2 has increased dramatically

Hello:

I have noticed a HUGE  increase in cell data usage by my phone (iPhone 6s) after updating the iOS to 10.0.2.    I had not changed anything since before the update.  Within a few days after updating my phone's iOS my cellular data more than double from the 15 days before the update!   I went from under a GB to 2.2 GB in  two day period.  I am only allowed 2.5 GB by my company.   Wifi Assist has been off. I am connected to a wifi most of the time, all day at the office and at home in the morning and evenings.  I have not changed my phone use habits nor have I down loaded any new apps.   I also did all the reset stuff after I downloaded the update such as  turn on and off, hold the home and side bottom until the little apple shows up.

I looked under the cellular section in settings and noticed a few things that are consuming much more data:

Facebook:  I had Facebook cell usage turned off.   However there was a large amount of data used. I also, by habit, only check Facebook when I am at a known wifi spot such as home or office.   This was below a MB before and close to a GB of data in the 2 day period.

YouTube: Same, had cell turned off and only look at it at home.

Maps- Never used it yet there is data usage.

messaging- HUGE amount of data used.  Normal usage for me. in the past the amount of data was under a MB.  Now it was 65 MG in 2 days,

Siri- I don't use Siri as in "hey Siri" or using voice commands.  I will use this from time to time for voice to texts.

Accuweather.  Same.

That is it as far as apps I use, the rest is systems stuff and e-mail.   I have uninstalled almost all apps except for the few I need such as my train ticket and scheduling aps and mail hope to halt this.   I wont be sending any more imessages either.

Any one experience anything like this?

iPad, iOS 9.0.1

Yes! I have iPhone 6 - After updating almost all of my data is gone for the month! I do not have Wifi Assist on and I only use Data when I am home and can connect to Wifi!

I see my iPhone connect to my Wifi then Bounce back and forth to the cell network. I have no issues with my wifi network at home. This issue also happens while at work. Additionally, the network at work asks for the password to the network - I type it in and iPhone tells me that it is the incorrect password, but then it connects. Then it disconnects after 2 minutes.

I have tried Wifi Setting reset. Help!

I have the exact same problem...NEVER ever have I ran out of data and I've been a customer for many years with my carrier.  I did my iOS 10.0.2 update and within 4 days my data usage exploded and I had to purchase more half way thru my billing cycle....I immediately deleted many apps from my phone...Always use WIFI at work and at home...Last week I turned off the WIFI Assist too....Well....Yesterday I got a message that I had used almost 4GB in less than 5 days...WRONG....Went to the Verizon store to see what the heck was going on....I must have my phone for work...They could not help me...put me on the phone with tech.services with Verizon and they saw my usage for the past year...averaging 3-4 GB a month and used 6 GB in July because I was traveling...Now I busting 14 Gb in 17 days of my billing cycle and had to go to 20 GB hoping to make it the rest of the month....Always had 10 GB and NEVER went over....The conclusion was they advised it was updates from Facebook and that's were my data was being used....I don't think so...I immediately deleted the app (while at the store) and told her I'd see her soon.....The reason you get an iPhone is to have apps for business and personal ....I'm not a happy camper right now....WHAT AM I TO DO????  Have an iphone for calls only!!!  Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Yes I have the same problem and need my phone data usage for work to be able to take payments And couldn't as ny data was used up. Just bought an extra 1gb at lunch and already used 80% 2 hours later. I use 5gb on average a month. I use my phone as a hotspot for my MacBook and not sure if it's something in that. Not happy as need my data to make my business run.

I sure hope someone has a helpful answer to this thread. I'm sorry I do not, but I'm in the same boat as everyone here, which especially ***** since the day after I updated my iOS, I left for three months of international travel. I had a "whole entire" 200 MB of data with AT&T Passport for the month, which is gone after three days. I just reset my Cellular Data Statistics 6 hours ago, while on Wifi with Cellular Data and Wifi Assist turned off ... and I still managed to use 121 KB of data during that time.

How can one possibly use cellular data when it's turned OFF???

I am very frustrated. I called Apple support two days ago about my data being all used up and the wifi connection change. All of this started when I upgraded to 10.0.2. It's the exact same problem you are describing.

They tried to make it sound like it was a problem with my carrier and to call them. Now that I've been looking around on the internet, this is a pretty universal problem. Apple needs to own the problem, apologize and tell its faithful customers that they are working on a fix--which I'm sure they are.

Thank you for posting. It help me to know that I'm not crazy.

Ever since I download the new update on my iPhone 6, my usage has skyrocketed!  I downloaded the update two days ago and my phone, while connected to wifi, has shown a 15% data usage increase in those 2 days.  Wifi assist is not on and I always have cellular data turned off so that I will connect to wifi only. My mom's ipad and my sister's iphone have not been updated and the data usage issue is not a problem with their devices.  The usage is only attributed to my phone and shows large amounts of activity every 6 hours since Sunday (for example, 823pm, 222am, 823am, 222pm).  We still have 15 days left on our cycle and can't afford to pay overages for data.  This needs to be fixed!!

If your cellular data is OFF, how is it possible that you're racking up any data usage?  Or are you referring to Wi-Fi usage?

If you are referring to cellular data usage, have you looked at which app is consuming the most cellular data?  This is shown under Settings> Cellular> Use Cellular Data For:   The list is sorted by app name, not usage, but you can see under each app name how much data it has used since you last reset the statistics.  Chances are it is not iOS but is an app that is having a problem, in which case you can disable cellular usage for that app (or others, or all).

Nope. I have done the same. I have had to turn off my Cellular data just to see. While my wife does consume some it is very little and she has not updated her iOS. So just under a simple experiment with that Apple needs to fix the problem. And for those of you that have a 6 or 6Plus and above, you just might want to wait before you upgrade.

Did you check your app data usage for anything suspicious?

I am noting mobile data usage when my cellular data is off. Could that be a problem?
