The limited functionality of Photo when compared to iPhote is like how much you are willing to pay for something, it's a personal choice. We vote with our dollars. Not everyone needs Sierra. Had I known about the iPhoto issue with Sierra, Sierra would not have been installed on my computer. Sierra offers no features I need other than security fixes if any.

Photos is far superior to iPhoto.

And comparing an expensive app with a free alternative only serves to remind that you get what you pay for.

Sure - start a new thread with details and post a complete question - iPhoto 9.6.1 does work on OS X Sierra (I have it and it does most certainly work - thousands of other also do) - no one can assist with "does not load" so you first have to do yrou part and write a question that can be answered - see Writing an effective Apple Support Communities question for help

Thread Jacking other's threads is rude and confusing and makes getting help more difficult even if you actually provide he details needed

I entirely agree with you. You only need to compare the file sizes of iPhoto to Photos - 1.7GB/50.4MB. Photos is inadequate in many areas. Examples include inability to batch change descriptions (useful for adding names, places or anything else to several photos), changing the original date/time (essential for scanned photos from your analogue archive) and having a smart album "unnamed" (for all the faces that are not recognised). Photos really is a slipshod, lazy piece of software. I had the experience of going to our local Mac store to find out where all the useful features of iPhoto had gone. I got the standard "learn to use Photos".

My fear is that one day someone in Apple will have the bright idea of making iPhoto incompatible in an OS upgrade. I would then have to put more effort into finding and buying an alternative to Photos to give me the same functionality as iPhoto.

Sorry about being rude.... the title of this discussion is "iPhoto does not work with Sierra". That is the problem I discribed. Not loading would, to me, be an corollary of not working and a continuation of the discussion "iPhoto does not work with Sierra".

Since you're here the, loading results in a dialog box. Therefore iPhoto did not load.User uploaded file

Do you really think we need to have a thread for "iPhoto does not work with Sierra" and another for "iPhoto does not load with Sierra"?

Thanks for your opinion "Photos is far superior to iPhoto". My problem still exists iPhoto does not work with Sierra. I have 9.6.1 installed and re-installed. Diskutility finds nothing wrong with my system.

I have tried Photo and in comparison to iPhoto find it wanting. Many, including you, have claimed iPhoto works with Sierra, your an expert, what am I missing? What are probable causes of iPhoto not working on my MacBook Pro with the latest version of Sierra and iPhoto?

If cost equals quality there would be a lot more profit in simply raising the product prices.

Do you really think we need to have a thread for "iPhoto does not work with Sierra" and another for "iPhoto does not load with Sierra"?

Yes.

For two reasons:

  1. It is inconsiderate to use the thread another person started. The original poster may not want to have the mailbox flooded by follow up questions of other people thinking they might have a similar problem.
  2. It is difficult to keep track of the configurations of the Macs in question, if several crashes on different Macs have been posted in the same discussion. It is so much easier to get a comprehensive picture if each crash is discussed in a separate thread. To see, what might be the problem in your case we need to know the type of Mac, the crash logs, the history of the way you installed Sierra - the system version, did you upgrade from El Capitan or an earlier system, did you install third party software, what kind of image types are in your Photos Library, where is your Photos library. And generally what happened before the crashes started. Any of this might be a factor and contribute to Photos crashing.

If several people are posting their crashlogs and detail about their systems in the same discussion it is very difficult to keep the information separate and it requires a lot of scrolling to find the relevant facts.

Sorry... I thought the purpose of starting a thread was to get a discussion started that could lead to a solution. This thread is about iPhoto not working with Sierra. There is no mention of iPhoto not working with a specific model or configuration, just iPhoto not working with Sierra. Which is my problem also.

Crashlogs are by design very detailed therefore long no matter which model or configuation generated them. They are, because of their detail, useful as a result.

My inquiry was limited to responding to the original thread in that my machine is also experiencing iPhoto not working with Sierra. Your response, to be factual, requires some mind reading skills I do not possess "The original poster may not want to have the mailbox flooded by follow up questions of other people thinking they might have a similar problem." I am sure the original poster is capable of suggesting people with similar problems should not respond to his call for help, instead ignore the original thread and start another thread. Each person experiencing a similar problem, according to you, should do the same such that that unless every discription of iPhoto not working with Sierra is exactly the same there should be a large number of thread with nearly the same experience. Is that your argument?

I have a MacBook Pro that is other other than Adobe Flash Player is stock. Like most folks these days I update via the App Store. This is my 31st year of using Macs for personal, business and industrial applications. In the Mac 256/512/Plus/SE days I did talked on the phone with Jobs.

Thanks for your response.... where do you suggest I look for the problem?

"not working" is a useless descriptor. What does it mean? Not launching? Or crashing (as yours is). Is that when launching? Or at some other point? These are very different symptoms and point to different approaches to problem solving.

If you want help - and I presume you’re here to get help not just argue - provide people with accurate information that allows us to help you. Start with a full description of the issue and provide the first 100-200 lines of the crash long.

That's how you get help.

Take a moment and look at the title of this discussion "iPhoto does not work on Sierra". Your complaint "a useless description" is with the originator of this thread, I had used a different discription "launch" instead of "work" and was corrected by another zillion level responder. Launch being a subset of "work" in this application.

From what I read you have no idea of how to fix this problem.

Is there anyone out there who has solved this problem? What worked for you?

Apparently you are not one of the people who has solved this problem. Therefore you are void of information needed to solve the original intent of this discussion, getting iPhoto to work on Sierra as some have reported is possible.

If you are saying I cited reasons and provided evidence to support my idea/theory, color me guilty. If you are implying to argue is a derogatory action, get a dictionary.

Without proposing a solution what would be your purpose of responding?
