I was told there was no need for a virus protection. I contacted ESET and asked them for information. They suggested uninstalling their product and then test to see if there were any more hangups. I have to say that they are fewer but there is still a problem and I have had to do a hard shutdown only twice in the last two weeks... as opposed to more than once per week. I am afraid to continue with all this seeing as I did not have any problems before El Capitan.

Feb 4, 2017 1:43 PM in response to ardani.rohman

I had this problem too, also with a Mac Mini, which seems to be mentioned in a lot of these comments.

Last week I turned off Bluetooth and an auto-backup app called SugarSync. So far it's been working and waking up just fine.

Both apps are constantly polling the outside world and maybe there's something in Sierra that doesn't shut down that functionality when the Mac is sleeping.

Anyway, so far so good.

I have A 2016 IMAC and for the first few months I didn't have an issue with it. Now I'm getting tons of crashes on wake from sleep mode. I don't have much running on this. Just a Zoom Tac 2-R thunderbolt interface and a VPN. Apple support has been pretty much useless on this. I can't disable bluetooth as my keyboard and mouse will not work. Any more suggestions?

Thanks for that info trepidus... I think I found the website you got that from:

macbook - Difference between autopoweroff and standby in pmset - Ask Different

Lots of interesting stuff on that page! And although there isn't mention of system crashes, I wonder if somehow part of the sleep cycle (specifically 'power nap') isn't finding hardware properly and crashing/shutting down as a result?

Here are some more useful sites on the topic that I encountered:

full description of available settings:

https://eclecticlight.co/2017/01/20/power-management-in-detail-using-pmset/

an example of how Power Nap might cause a system crash and one person's solution:

Power Nap, power management settings and FileVault 2 | Der Flounder

My take on all this is that things are getting complex and messy, to the point of affecting stability on a daily basis. In my case, I don't know if I have a serious hardware issue with my internal NVME SSD that is being exposed by the sleep cycle, or if it's just an issue with the ever-increasing complexity – a complexity that has taken another leap forward with High Sierra and its APFS containers and eventual disk encryption.

I have spent over a week diagnosing something that shouldn't be a problem, and I'm still not sure where my system stands in terms of stability. It reminds me far too much of Windows and the constant attention that system required every six months (with the inevitable wipe and restart). Apple has always been so good at discipline... the OS X and Intel transitions were breathtaking examples of how to manage complexity. I certainly hope something as simple as sleep isn't a harbinger of trouble to come,

Thanks jofoe for the URL. That's the site where I found the hints.

What I tried to do:

I wanted to use hibernate mode as default mode when go to standby or when closing the lid of the MacBook Pro (write all the memory to the SSD and cut off power to the memory).

The idea was to prevent data loss when the crash happens. The MacBook Pro did not crash again since the modifications.

As far as I understand the MacBook uses some standby mode when closing the lid (but memory still uses power) and sometime later there is some kind of deep sleep mode. I somehow hoped the crash happens between changing those modes. Turning into hibernate mode everytime I close the lid could undergo the problem.

At least it did not crash again since 3 days now. And I keep watching this issue.

I just wanted to share my experience and maybe someone can benefit from it.

Sep 23, 2016 9:51 PM in response to ardani.rohman

When you say 'crash', what do you mean?

Probably something that is running in the background. open the black apple at the top left. Choose system preferences, then users and groups, and then login items. Removed everything in that window.

You can add apps and programs back to the login items window one by one to see what is causing the crash.

You can also start the computer up in safe boot (hold down the shift key when starting up) which will make the computer start with no third-party apps. If that solves the issues, you just need to disable the third party apps and add them back one by one until the issue re-occurs.

Okay. Next thing to try is resetting the NVRAM. Turn the computer off.

Push the power button. When you hear the startup sound, hold down the COMMAND, OPTION, P and R keys. Keep holding those 4 keys until you hear the startup sound for a second time.

This will reset the memory so that the computer will restart properly. Let us know if there are any further issues.

I had same issue, MacOS Sierra was hanging up after sleep, (i could see everything on my screen, but I wasn't able to click or switch to any other screen, cursor was still working)

It solved with following solution

Push the power button. When you hear the startup sound, hold down the COMMAND, OPTION, P and R keys. Keep holding those 4 keys until you hear the startup sound for a second time.

thanks

Unfortunately, I don't have a solution, but likely am having at least a similar problem with my Mac Mini (late 2014 & 8 GB RAM running 10.12). It goes to sleep an all is good. little white light is on. Bluetooth speaker is connected. As soon as I hit a key to wake, white light goes off, bluetooth speaker disconnects, nada. I have to press the power button and it boots from the sleep image. I tried setting it to not put the hard drive to sleep. Reset the SMC, NVRAM, etc. Nothing.

This started happening immediately after upgrading to Sierra. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. The logs look clean. First entry after power button is something about power failure and reboot from image. Nothing really before that.

I have the 'crash/turns off' upon wake issue - I've had it since Yosemite, but it persists with Sierra on my 2011 MacMini.

As people have pointed out, start-up apps may be an issue.

I had this on a previous Mac and it was then related to USB devices - specifically, when my wireless Logitech mouse dongle was plugged into my Apple keyboard - when I moved it to the back of the Mac, it was fine.

I only installed Sierra a couple of days ago and was disappointed this is still in there. I'll try disconnecting all USB devices and slowly adding back to see if it's the old issue returned.
