My iPhone will fall asleep while watching videos with the YouTube app.

While watching a video, after a couple of minutes without touching the screen, it will go dim and then a few seconds later it will turn off. I don't understand why it is doing this.

iPhone 6s, iOS 10

Hi reggiefromtuscaloosa,

I understand that while you are watching videos, after a few minutes the screen will go dim and then turn off. I like to watch videos on my iPhone as well, so I can understand the concern. I will be happy to help you with this.

What you are describing is the auto-lock feature. You can adjust this setting to be able to watch your videos without interruption.

Use Auto-Lock and Raise to Wake

After a period of inactivity, the Auto-Lock setting locks your screen with your passcode to help protect your personal information. Here's how to turn it on or off:

  1. Go to Settings > General > Auto-Lock.
  2. Choose an amount of inactivity* (from 30 Seconds up to 5 Minutes) that will turn off and lock your screen. Or to turn off Auto-Lock, select Never.

Raise to Wake turns on your screen as soon as you pick up your device. To turn this feature on or off, go to Settings > General > Display & Brightness. Raise to Wake works with iPhone 6s and later.
* When used for business or education purposes, some iOS devices might have passcode restrictions that prevent you from adjusting the Auto-Lock settings.

Adjust the display settings on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Cheers!

This just started happening to me today while I was streaming on Direct TV. This never happened before. The only thing I can think of that may have caused this is due to the recent update to my iPhone. I also agree with others on here that we should not have to adjust our settings each time we want to stream. Please tell me iOS 11.1.2 will fix this nuisance.

This started happening to me in Jan, 2017. It might have started earlier, but that's when I started taking notes. It was happening on Directv and YouTube, MSNBC that I know of. If I shut down and restarted my iPad it would be OK for 24 hours then do it again. I went to the Genius Bar. They were ready to replace my iPad but we decided to continue watching it since it really seemed like an iOS issue tied to a certain combination of apps. I spent hours over two months with Apple support. They really had no idea what was going on, and had me do things like set auto lock to never, delete and reload directv and YouTube apps, log in and out of TV provider. They were really at a loss. I could recreate it at will as long as I did not shutdown/restart my iPad and offered to help them trouble shoot. I pulled the crash logs and sent them to them. The last thing I did on 3/5/17 was log out of DirectTV as provider (again). YouTube was updated earlier that week. Miraculously it "fixed itself". Well, 3 days ago, on 8/15/17 it started again. Something must have got pushed out that wasn't announced. I'm getting ready to call support again. Has it started happening to anyone else again? Apple, if you are monitoring this string, you can reach me at my Apple ID.

Norm, this is not an auto lock issue, even though changing auto lock to never does keep it from happening. It happened again repeatedly on 10/10/17. I called apple and they told me I should have my iPad replaced. I made an appt with the Genius Bar but it fixed itself before my appt to and I decided to hold off. I understand this not a widespread issue, but it does happen. I urge everyone to call apple when it happens. Try to recreate it before you call. Do not reboot your iPad before you call. Have them look at my file for complete notes on taking a crash dump and sending it to them. It may be hardware, but they need to have enough history from multiple people to really fix it, not just send out a refurbished iPad that may have the same problem. Norm, if you're Apple, please pass this to a tech specialist.
