macOS Sierra keeps freezing

I installed Sierra on my MacBook Pro a few days ago, and several times it has frozen. First the computer stops responding to my external mouse. About 30 seconds later it stops responding to the trackpad and keyboard. I have to force a restart. Why is this?

Perhaps relevant: According to Activity Monitor, kernel_task now frequently uses several hundred (and sometimes more than 2,000) percent of my CPU. Who knew that was possible?

Do you have boot camp installed or have any mounted NTFS drives? I was having freezing due to my antivirus trying to read NTFS drives. I eliminated the freezing by un-mounting the NTFS partitions or installing Paragon NTFS. I think what's happening is the MacOS does not have full access to NTFS and the antivirus does not like that. Either getting rid of NTFS or giving MacOS full access solves this issue for me.

Interesting, I have issues with my Imac 21` (late 2010), but it "only" crashes about once a day. I can move the mouse, but everything else freezes (including magic mouse gestures). I have no USB device connected and no second monitor. But I do have Paragon NTFS installed and problems with it (Paragon is giving me messages I should activate my software, but paragon settings say it is activated.
