Disk Not Ejected Properly macOS Sierra

I upgraded to MacOS Sierra a couple of days ago and ever since, whenever my MacBook Pro (Mid 2015) goes to sleep my external hard drives (all but Time Machine) are disconnected. Upon waking the computer I get the "Disk Not Ejected Properly" alert. I was not having this issue prior to updating to the new OS. I've tried restarting the computer and experienced the issue again. Please help!

All of the drives are running through a hub - which has never given me issues until the Sierra update. The two drives disconnecting are portable drives (1 Western Digital, 1 Seagate). My time machine (which isn't disconnecting, also a Seagate) is a powered, desktop drive.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Your closing statement of "it will just show up" indicates you are talking about a very different topic than this thread is about. This thread is not about getting external drives "to show up" on the Desktop. This thread is all about Sleeping your Mac with external drives attached, only to find a "Disk Not Ejected Properly" error notice when you wake the Mac. Nothing prevents the drives from appearing when you Wake the Mac. This thread focuses on the problem of the "Not Ejected Properly" error notifications. Your procedure does nothing to eliminate those error messages, which again are the heart of this discussion.

I've tried everything to get rid of/stop/delete this really irritating message. Every time I unlock my iMac this message appears multiple times. The disk in question has NOT been ejected at all, and I always follow the correct procedure for ejecting any disk. I've the latest version of High Sierra installed version 10.13.1 and it's still happening.

It's driving me nuts. Has Apple got an answer on how to stop this, or anyone else with more knowledge than me of how to get rid of this energy sapping stupid message? :-(

It’s hard to understand why this has not been fixed through so many “major” OS releases. This is something that used to just work. Quality control does not seem to be a priority anymore, which is disturbing. Of the 30+ years that I have been using Apple products, the last 4 years have been by far the most disappointing.

It's still by far the best OS, and we have to see the positives rather than focus on what is, perhaps, a trivial minor point?

Like you I'm a veteran of Apple's OS and now go back more years than I care to remember. But I love the OS really, and would never change or desert Apple. They do make amazingly good products, albeit at a premium price, and the fact I link all of them together makes it even more irritating that a glich like this one can't be sorted out?

Let's hope they get this one nailed down, and kicked into touch. Soon! :-)

Yes, but being the best when the alternatives are either too arcane for most folks (Linux), or are some version of Windows, is not something to brag about. Quality control is clearly slipping, and the direction being taken with hardware is just plain disheartening. The recent ”What’s a computer?” ads, which I find both condescending and clueless, are indicative of a widespread general cluelessness at Apple. The premium prices for Macs are starting to seem like a naked money grab rather than value for the money, when what you get is a sealed, soldered (but oh, so thin) device that you will have to abandon prematurely because it is prohibitive to fix and cannot be upgraded.

The yearly OS upgrade cycle is ridiculous. It is now primarily a source of anxiety and aggravation. What apps will break now? How much will the UI have deteriorated in the latest iteration? Will the disk ejection bug ever be fixed? Oh, that’s right, no one needs external storage because everyone has broadband and can just store their files on iCloud. What could possibly go wrong with that?

There are very good reasons why I have no Mac model more recent than 2012. I feel no confidence that Apple can produce a Mac Pro that I will want to own. It is a painful state of affairs for me, believe me, because I have really loved and valued my workhorse Macs over the years, as I have loved the best of the Mac OS versions.

While I agree with the bulk of what you said, what you said really has nothing to do with the title of this thread named, "Disk Not Ejected Properly." And while it is true that the title also says "macOS Sierra," that part of the title is highly misleading as this "Disk Not Ejected Properly" problem occurred on earlier versions of MacOS as well, and therefore cannot be argued to be a part of some "new bad Apple" or "it gets worse every year in MacOS" stance.

Again, I agree with you, but I want the separate, on-topic issue to be address first and foremost. That means Apple needs to stop generating that "Disk Not Ejected Properly" message entirely. For truly, who among us can say they had a volume corrupted because it wasn't ejected properly? I've used Macs since 1984 and I've lost no data due to improper ejecting. So please join me in sending intelligent but pointed feedback to Apple about the "Disk Not Ejected Properly" problem here:

Can you explain why it's important to disable wake for network access? Wouldn't this, for example, make my laptop's music unavailable to the Apple TV when it goes off to sleep? And why would this help with the USB drives? Is it because they may be mounted, and not unmounted gracefully, when the system wakes on network access?

And what does Bluetooth have to do with a USB external drive?

Thanks,

I've complained about the "disk not ejected properly" problem, myself, but, as one who still administers PCs in addition to macOS computers, please let me tell you that Apple is very, very far from devolving to the point of becoming the new Windows. MS Windows is the wreck of the Hesperus compared to my lovely iMac, and I'm grateful for it every day. You should be, too.
