Disk Not Ejected Properly macOS Sierra

Exact same problem here with early 2015 13" MacBook Pro.

An SMC Reset has been known to fix that: Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support. Try a different USB port also.

Thanks for the quick reply and link John - I will give that a try 🙂. Having the issue on the thunderbolt 2 port.

Having the same issue on my older Mac Pro with a USB 3 card I'm using. Tried a script from another site to help with the problem. Any workarounds?

Have you done the fsck command already?

I've uninstalled WD Utilities

will shut down tonight and reset SMC and NVRAM

we'll see if that does anything.

cant help thinking 10.12.3 is to blame. It was fine under 10.12.2

very good, let's hope it stays that way.

(in afterthought: the WD software was crippling more in 10.12.3 than in 10.12.2 probably).

I'm now past the second night and still the WD Drive is going strong. Still mounted, all data accessible and not an error message in sight!

I Guess in desperation you'll have already done it, but if you do have WD Drive Utilities installed, uninstall it.

I've never had the WD software installed, and always have had the "not properly ejected" error.
The WD software may have been part of the problem for some people, but not for others (like myself).

It's never a problem ejecting the drive manually, it's when you have the drive connected all the time.

Could you please give details on how to get in terminal to desired disk and execute fsck command?

shutdown the mac.

Start while holding CMD+S: this will start in terminal mode.

when started completely: after the cursor type

fsck -y

let it do the job.

Then type

reboot

and start normal.
