Black background randomly after sleep

If I restart the system all is well... I get the silver background on my Apple TV 4gen. However, after the system goes to sleep and then I wake it up the background goes black and although I can see my installed apps I cannot go to the app list/dock and see any of them (eg: double clicking the TV button on the remote). Again, if I restart the system it's fine again (see screenshots). Any idea why this might be happening?User uploaded file

i have had the same issue. Had my Apple TV 4 replaced due to another issue but the problem did not disappear with new box. I link the HDMI to Apple TV through my AV receiver so a HDMI related bug could make sense.

I have the exact same issue.

Apple Care told me to do a complete reset - re-install of the TVOs.

It did not resolve the issue.

You don't need to do that to recover the normal background. You need only re-start the machine.

But the problem keeps coming back after the sleep mode. I call it the ultra dark mode. Insane.

I put in a second case with Apple Care. I'm surprised they don't appear to know what it is.

Hopefully someone has a solution.

The Apple Store replaced my Apple TV under warranty to try and fix this issue. Unfortunately it came back a week later. I've noticed that once the background is black, going to Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software resets the background and makes the system jump to the home screen. Maybe it's an issue with automatic checks for updates. I'm going to submit it as feedback to Apple.

This might be some new information.

My friend has been having this problem for a while. He's sending it in to Apple to get it replaced, and in the meanwhile he's borrowing mine. Mine has never had the problem at all in all of my usage of it. However within a couple of days of him using it at his place, my Apple TV just recently experienced the issue.

So perhaps it has something to do with the environment in which the aTV is in, either the remote controlling it or the TV it's connected to via HDMI. Again, my aTV never had the issue and only just experienced it when it was transferred to his place temporarily, so there must be some kind of event triggering it to happen. If it helps, his TV is a Sony X850C. The aTV is connected to the internet via ethernet to an Airport Time Capsule, though so was mine so that might not be the issue. The TV could be doing something funky over the HDMI interface causing the bug to trigger on the tvOS, or maybe something on the network could be doing it.

Hopefully this information adds to the discussion.
