Problems with macOS Sierra? This fix may help you.

Hi, everyone.

I wanted to post a solution I developed because of some erratic behavior I was experiencing with macOS Sierra (no sound, slow boot, sluggish performance, ...etc). This fixed all my issues:

  1. After upgrading to Sierra, reboot your system and reset NVRAM and SMC
    1. Reset NVRAM - How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
    2. Reset SMC - Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support
  2. Boot normally
  3. Restart
  4. Boot to Recovery Mode (Command + R) - About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
    1. Launch Disk Utilty
      1. Click on your Physical Disk (should be the one above Macintosh HD)...click First Aid and allow it to Run
      2. Click on Macintosh HD...click First Aid and allow it to Run
      3. Exit Disk Utility
    2. Launch Reinstall macOS and complete the reinstall. Be very patient.
  5. Once the reinstall process is complete:
    1. Restart
    2. Reset NVRAM again - How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
    3. Reset SMC again - Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support
    4. Boot normally
    5. Restart
    6. Boot to Recovery Mode again (Command + R) - About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
      1. Launch Disk Utility
        1. Click on your Physical Disk (should be the one above Macintosh HD)...click First Aid and allow it to Run
        2. Click on Macintosh HD...click First Aid and allow it to Run
        3. Exit Disk Utility
      2. Exit Recovery Mode and boot normally

Happy to help with this,

Totally agree! I paid more to have mac because it's "so good" and "so intuitive" HA! Why does it have to be so difficult to keep up with my Mac IOS changes trying to fix bugs from previous versions.

My upgrade to El Capitan was disaster. I'm not a computer geek. I've never partitioned a drive. I had to call Apple to take control of my puter to help me last time. Will I have to do this again?

Sierra sounded like it would be nice to have Siri etc but when I saw the problems I got scared.

In fairness to Apple, Macs and other Apple products are still far more intuitive than Brand X. But the lesson I keep forgetting is to wait until the second release of each operating system, and let others go through these problems instead of me. I'm hoping that when they come out with 10.12.1, I'll just be able to install it and it will fix everything. But we shall see. Since you mentioned Siri, I must add that Siri on my Mac is really great. Since my iMac is always on, if I have any question about anything at all, I just have to click on the Siri icon in my menu bar, and ask my question, and I get my answer right away. By the way, recent articles published by IBM show that Macs are much less costly over time due to the lower cost of support, something I've realized since my first Mac about 30 years ago!

If the Mail folder in your User's Library has issues, you might need to do a cleanup prior to the 10.12.1 update.

  • Uncheck Mail for each account. This takes you to System Preferences > Internet Accounts. Uncheck Mail
  • Note in the User's Library the folders that actually contain your data is still there. For best results you might want to delete the alphanumeric folders containing your IMAP accounts. Do not delete the POP or local "On My Mac" folders unless you export first.
  • Delete the com.apple.mail folder in User's Library > Containers.

Example of folder names and the MailData folder in V4:

User uploaded file

Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar.

Log in and empty the Trash

If you have not run the 10.12.1 update do so before opening Mail. This is a lengthy upgrade. As always, backup first to Time Machine and/or clone before updating.

  • In System Preferences > Internet Accounts, check one email account only.
  • Open Mail. Is it syncing?
  • Check in your User's Library to be sure it's making the account folder correctly.
  • Once the account has completed sync, go to System Preferences > Internet Accounts and add each remaining account one at a time. Let each sync up before adding next. This way is there is an issue you will know what account is causing the problem.

Show User's Library

The User's Library folder is hidden by default.

  • Select the Home folder in the sidebar.
  • Under View in the Menu bar select Show view Options.
  • Check Library.

Hi,

Yes you're right, did think to myself why didn't I just do that in the first place.

I opened a chat service but having had them guide me to reinstall twice, still an error kept occurring during installation. I had to end up booking an appointment with the Apple store to see my Macbook.

Appointment due in the next two days, will update. However, think it's going to be a full format, may have to buy a thunderbolt cable to transfer files as my friend has a Macbook. Does anyone know if this would work seeing as I can't get beyond the login screen?

Thanks

BrainSel,

Thank you for providing the solution that solved the problem I has having with my computer. Since installing Sierra, my 2010 Macbook Air would constantly hang when using Safari (many times with beachballs but often without them) and the fans ran nearly continuously.

I had seen several posts to reinstall Sierra which I did several times with no luck. After following all of the steps you outlined, the problem went away - no hanging and the fans rarely come on.

Thanks again for you help!

Hi All,

I am talking to you guys from my Mac, wohoo. No formatting needed!

This is going to sound strange, I took it to the Apple Genuis Bar. Turns out not such a Genius! The guy could not get any of the short cut start up keys to work. He even bypassed the keyboard with a usb keyboard but still nothing, just kept starting up normally. He eventually gave up and said my MacBook has a hardware fault, the upper keyboard case is faulty and needs repairing and that they can't do it because my Mac is an antique as it's a 2009.

WHATTTTT! 2009? are you for really??? Turns out my bottom case it's the original to my mac. I have a few explanation as to why that might be but not fully certain. Doesn't matter will place a sticker on it. P.s mine is an early 2011.

I gave up with it as I was going away just over a week on holiday, thought I might just buy a thunderbolt cable once I get back. However, just getting back today I thought maybe Apple has sorted something out, so may get an altered version of the installation over the WIFI. so I proceeded to continue the installation from where it left it last. Yet again it errors and just hangs.

When attempting again I see a section before the installation advising to do a disk check or time machine or file vault. Having done a disk diagnostic before I knew this was not going to achieve anything. Not having set up a time machine, there was no point venturing my thought towards that path. So that left File Vault, so on the top bar menu I selected utilities where I found File Vault. Selected it and it asked me for a password and to the password verify!

Ran the installation again, noticed installation was going beyond the error point, Yehaaa!

There is along wait for it to configure, but here I am.

Anyone got an explanation as to why assigning a password to file vault has appeared to do the trick?

This also worked for me after I feel like I tried everything else for weeks..

Trash Bluetooth Preferences & Shutdown the Mac

1. Close System Preferences and/or any app that was trying to use or configure any Bluetooth device with the Mac

2. From the OS X Finder, hit Command+Shift+G to summon Go To Folder and enter the following path:

/Library/Preferences/

(Note this is /Library/Preferences/ not ~/Library/Preferences/)

3. Locate the file named “com.apple.Bluetooth.plist” and delete it (you may see a com.apple.Bluetooth.plist.lockfile too, if so delete that as well) – this is a system folder so you will need to authenticate with an admin user

4. Head to the Apple menu and choose “Shut Down” to power down the Mac. Shut down the Mac and keep it turned off for about a minute, do not simply reboot.

5. Wait a minute or so before booting the Mac again

6. Head to the Bluetooth menu or System Preference panel to re-sync your hardware

I got these steps from this article: Fixing a “Bluetooth Not Available” Error on a Mac

If this doesn't work, try the steps in this article: How to Reset the Bluetooth Hardware Module

After updating to sierra I can't log in. I power up and get to log in. I enter password and it stays a never ending spinning wheel. I have been on the phone with support two times and performed several of the steps mentioned but not all together as you have listed. I have tried to reinstall sierra and it never worked. Computer was fine until I downloaded sierra. Mac book pro about 4 years old. Should I try your steps listed and will I loose anything?

I can't answer that, but if you can find a way to install the latest Sierra update, 10.12.2, that might help. Or better yet, since you have a laptop, if you can get to an Apple Store and book an appointment with a "Genius" at the Genius Bar, perhaps that can help you since they'll have it right in front of them, will see exactly what's going on, might ask to keep it for a while. I had a Sierra problem that was eventually fixed after lots of time spent on the phone with senior Apple Support people, who were very helpful, but I had to do so much work on my own, it would have saved me lots of time had I just given it to the Genius Bar to do the work.
