Hi Weeasle,

after trying all your (and others) suggestions and although I was quite optimistic at certain moments I give up now.

I have a iPhone 6 which uses all identical apps to my iPhone 7.

Difference is: 6 widgets on, background refreshing for 21 apps. Just a working phone as you would expect. And I get 35 hrs Standby with 8 to 9 hrs usage! Then still 25% bat. left. No need to even think about charging. Just charging every other night for a couple of hours.

My iPhone 7: latest results after tweaking, no widgets, no background activities at all, location services reduced to a max. minimum, mail manual etc. (actually no usable smartphone anymore): 12 hrs Stby, 2,5 hrs Usage. Then being at 18%!

Even sitting at my desk in Flightmode!! it looses 35% bat. in 6 hrs. For T.F. what?

As soon they get some Apple will send me a new one. There's some hope left...

best, UliK

Weeasle, thank you very much! your steps helped me to resolve 10.0.2 battery drain. Please make sure to spread the word for many more users, I'll try to do that too.

It's now 1.48 pm and I'm still at 83% after using the phone for the conference calls in the morning and playing with it for an hour or so 😉

Thanks again!

I Had this problem with the 10.0.2 update and I tried dowgradng software and it failed and I had trouble getting the backup to work. I wouldnt try downgrading. Doing this below helped my batter out a ton. i was dropping 1% every few minutes. Now I have my normal battery life.

If you go into Preferences -> Privacy -> Location Services -> System Services you will see a culprit (if you have the Status Bar option enabled). The Compas calibration and Location based alerts constantly activate and deactivate. (copied from another post)

HI Dale,

Great news it worked for you!! Now you will have your work cut out applying the steps to all your other devices.. It takes generally 30min - 1.5hrs depending on data to be backled up..

For any newcomers to this thread, here is the super succinct steps for the fix (at your own risk always have multiple backups)..

1. Reset All Settings

2. Reset Network Settings

3. Backup using latest iTunes. (If at any stage prompted to upgrade iOS, select "Download" only)

4. Reconnect USB cable and tap Restore in iTunes .. At end of process select the option to restore your Backup.. If prompted to install Carrier Update, answer yes.

I have left out the steps for downgrading from 10.0.2 and upgrading again as I am fairly confident the All Settings and Network Settings Resets and then Backup, then Restore is the magic for the fix.. However if that still doesn't fix your battery drain on 10.0.2, please follow my longer post on page three that includes downgrade and upgrade.. Pls note the backup should be done after the All & Network Settings Resets..

Good luck everyone and thanks to the three or four of you (incl you Dale) who updated us with your replies of success!!! I have filed a bug report with Apple describing the problem, the fix and providing thread links as evidence of the problems.. They marked the Bug Report closed but I hope they action a fix based on it and/or other reports..

Happy iOSing,

WEeasle

I Wouldn't worry so much about the carrier update.. The real bottom

line is if after following the steps outlined whether your phone can sit overnight without losing more than 10-20% charge (that is the simplest test because usage patterns and 3rd party apps can vary so widely from user to user but if you don't use the phone (standby) then it shouldnt use much battery over 12hrs.. If it does and you tried everything here, it might be best to visit an Apple Store to make an appointment.. Best, Weeasle

Hi Weeasle,

Apple sent me a new iPhone7.

After charging it to 100% and restoring it with the backup from my first iPhone7 it lasted 27 hrs with 7hrs usage and went down to 21%! What a difference. Using all that stuff again like some background refreshing, loc services and widgets. All this was switched off on my first phone to make the battery last max 10 to 12 hrs...

So I must conclude I had a faulty one and all your solutions could not work in my case although I had some hope in between. Thanks for your suggestions anyway and I am happy you could help other users.

All the best,

UliK

Thanks for sharing Ulik, it seems in a small number of cases (like yours), hardware is to blame.. Hopefully hardware faults are rare (on my new iPhone 7, I am getting 6-7hrs usage and 20-45hrs standby time with 10-20% left which is totally epic - loving the new iPhone 7 and being able to go for 2+ days off the charger - apparently iOS 10.1 will improve this.. let all keep our fingers crossed)...

Just to add to @weeasle's comment about avoiding all of Apple's infamous OTA Updates...The daily reminders to update drive me crazy and even though Apple swears it does not "force" its customers to update their iOS, Apple has done the world a huge "favor" by eliminating the need for its customers to voluntarily download the new OTA Updates. In other words, Apple has decided it will download the newest OTA Update on your iphone without your permission when it is plugged in, and on wifi. The OTA Updates are full of bugs and are at least 500MB in size that you have to constantly delete every day. Spend the time and energy on the next iOS instead of half-a**ing each update!

On my iPhone 5S the battery-consumption culprit (according to the information under Settings) is Music.

On iOS 9.3.5 I would take my phone to work, listen to headphones for about 1/3 of the day, and come home with 65% battery left. I could reliably use the phone for 2 days in a row without charging.

On iOS 10.0.2, if I did exactly the same thing, battery would be down to 35%. Two days operation was completely out of the question.

If I don't listen to music at all during the day, battery still drops to 60%, and it still lists the Music app (background activity!) as the largest consumer.

I have all music files on my phone, and do not subscribe to any streaming service. Supposedly cellular data is disabled for Music, but it seems to find stuff for me on the internet anyway (with no WiFi available).

AND, this is even with some of the iOS 9 Music functionality stripped out. But, the album cover art grows and shrinks as you touch buttons. Woo Hoo!

Someday when I have 6 hours to spare maybe I'll try the reset & reload iOS 10 workaround.

Apple update ios 10.0.2 battery drain fast.
