Chrome keeps crashing when it goes into fullscreen mode on the Sierra OS.

Ever since I upgraded to the new OS Sierra, Chrome keeps crashing when it goes into full screen mode. For example, I'd fullscreen a video on youtube, and after a couple minutes Chrome crashes and I'm logged out for some weird reason. I have to then enter my login password to my mac user only to find chrome restarting with the error message "Google Chrome did not shutdown properly."

Its really odd that it logs me out of my user account on the mac everytime it crashes, and not just shuts down Chrome.
And by "logs me out of user account", I mean I'm logged out over here:

Anyone having the same issue?

Thanks!

Rahal, I am also having this same issue, just after switching to Sierra last night. It seems to work just fine when i full-screen in safari, although IMO chrome is much easier to use than safari. I guess we will just have to wait until an update is released either for sierra or chrome.

EDIT

I read that you could turn off hardware acceleration for a fix. I'm not exactly sure what this does, but I turned off hardware acceleration in Chrome's advanced settings and it works just like it did on the previous osx. For reference, I am using chrome version 53.0.2785.116.

Hope that works out for you.

Hi Rahal Vi,

I understand that when putting Chrome into full screen mode the app quits unexpectedly as well as logging you out of your account. A good place to start with such a situation is to start your Mac in Safe Mode and see if the issue continues.

Try starting your Mac in Safe Mode. Restart your computer. Hold the Shift key when you hear the startup sound. Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo appear. This starts your Mac in Safe Mode. Safe mode performs a directory check of your startup disk, and removes some cache data. After your Mac finishes starting up, restart your Mac normally (without holding the Shift key) and see if the issue is resolved.

If the issue continues in Safe Mode the next step would be to test in a new user account per the steps outlined in the article linked below.

I had a long phone call with Apple support over this. I did as they asked, and in the end they linked to my screen to look at on-screen messages. In safe mode the problem did not happen with a test safari video so the operative said the full screen issue is to do with something other than the OS, and invited me to delete all my login programmes. This did not help. He gave up and brought a senior colleague to the phone. He said hello and the phone line went dead. That's it. After about two hours on the phone..

Has anyone any idea? I do photography and when I switch to full screen in Preview to review slideshows it crashes, in Safari when expanding small videos it crashes... I am getting so fed up. So far it has not affected PhotoshopCC or Bridge when switching from icon to full screen.

Further to my earlier comment about being in conversation with Apple about this, it all ended up with me having to conclude that since the problem did not show itself in a test clean boot then something was clashing in my array of programmes. So with Apple's advice I formatted and reinstalled my machine and so far the problem has gone away. I needed their help to do this because of some extra steps to do with having part ssd and part spinning disk.

So I've got the same issue but with all applications that I use in full screen. I set up a test account and the problem went away. But it's more hassle for me to move everything over than it is to avoid using full screen mode. So I've got all apps in smaller windows and am OK with that. I can't find the famous universalaccess.plist file that others have had success with by removing the file. There's no such file in the library on my mac. Not sure if I should worry about that? So I am coping with the problem but I really think that this is not good enough by Apple.

So my laptop got really messed up when I installed Sierra.

1. Under about mac, it said service ID unavailable.
2. My disk utility showed errors as well
3. Videos on Chrome, Firefox, Opera ended up restarting my Macbook Pro. ( I am not too sure about safari, because that test was still inconclusive.)
4. I had to give my MBP to the service station in order for them to reinstall the OS and re-serialize my device. ( I couldn't reinstall the OS in any way : Internet recovery or bootable pendrive. )

I thought the issue was solved and everything was back to normal, once I got the laptop back from the service station.

However recently I was using the ultra surf plugin on chrome, and the computer hung and restarted.
(I have disabled h/w acceleration as well. I didn't have any luck with this. Do let me know if you find a solution.)

Chrome keeps crashing when it goes into fullscreen mode on the Sierra OS.
