macOS Sierra freeze on iMac late 2009 using Safari

Hey guys,

Since the installation of macOS Sierra on my iMac 27 inch late 2009, I'm experiencing freezes of the computer with the following symptoms:

- the freeze occurs when I scroll a webpage in Safari.

- The mouse cursor still moves but I can't click and manipulate the system ; the keyboard doesn't work, as well.

- A force reboot is mandatory to recover.

- I can establish a ssh connection from my MacBook to the iMac, suggesting that Darwin is still running well.

- The log indicates "userspace_watchdog_timeout.spin report for WindowServer version", suggesting that the problem is related to a crash of the WindowServer.

Somebody here with the same machine has the same problem?

Thanks!

Hey guys,

I have a good news. I asked through my bug report when this problem is supposed to be fixed.

Bug report team told me that the bug is still under investigation BUT they say also that I should test this issue on macOS 10.12.5.

Hopefully, a fix will be proposed in the coming macOS 10.12.5 update. 🙂

I have the same freezing problem as described throughout this thread. Freezes about once a day during about 2-3 hours of use. All times freezing have happened in Safari for me... mouse will move, but all clicks are unresponsive and the only way to restore functionality seems to be a manual reboot. I only noticed this problem after updating to Sierra. I have tried a few of the solutions in this thread (disabled extensions in Safari, switched to Chrome for a while, etc.) but nothing has worked. I have not clean installed because that's not a reasonable solution for me right now.

Just wanted to contribute to this thread to further display how widespread the problem is.

I'll keep my fingers crossed, but for me a clean install wasn't a solution. (iMac Late 2009) Using Chrome for ten days and it seems to be a temporary solution to replace Safari. Yesterday I needed some iCloud-Tabs and therefore started the newest Safari Technology Preview - two minutes later I had my first freeze since I stopped using Safari 😮 It's really annoying

Yep, me too. Scroll in Safari and everything freezes. Keyboard is locked out. The mouse tracks but cannot interact with anything. No way out except a hard shut down. I've been wondering if the system is even reporting this as a crash.

Please fix this, Apple! I prefer Safari browsing but I'm just about to give up on it.

That's too bad :-(. The bug report that I submitted was closed as a duplicate. It appears that the original bug report has also been closed, so I assume that means that they have a fix to be released at some point. In the meantime I've been using FireFox and trying to avoid Safari to avoid the hang.

Hi everybody, this problem also exists with late 2014 iMac 27" Retina with AMD Radeon R9 graphics card. Sierra freezes. I am not the only one with this computer, there are multiple other threads.

However:

When operating in safe mode the problem is gone, also the graphics acceleration. I assume the graphics driver is disabled in safe mode, hence the terrible and completely unworkable display performance. The messages in this and other threads which indicates to me that the problem is the graphics driver.

I just hope apple is working on this. Working with other browsers is a fix of symptoms, possibly because 3rd party browsers do not reach as deep into the core of the graphics driver as Safari does.

The problem is that we do not know which other software is causing the problems and Safari is the real thing for Apple users we can only wait. It is like what another user stated, feels like being back in MS Windows, and now I my son is laughing out loud with his Windows 8.1 laptop that was just US$ 3000 cheaper.

I am (was) a big Apple fan, but now I am stuck with a high cost production Machine that is causing nothing but trouble.

Apple should seriously start issuing statements about this problem. At least to their customers or to this thread.

This is not how these forums work, the best thing you can do is to use the Feedback Assistant to report this (like I suggested in the MacRumors thread). If everyone does this we can bump up the issue on the priority list and hopefully get it fixed before Christmas.

We just bought a week ago the same machine (says late 2015 but we just got it), 27" with the R9 and not having issues, so this is very concerning. We are coming up on our 15 days to return it, and don't want to be stuck with a machine that still has the same problem we bought a new machine to avoid.

Almost sounds like troll bait, are you seriously considering returning a perfectly functional iMac just because a few people (not even 1% of the users) have a problem with Safari? There are other browsers, even if you did get the bug you could circumvent it until a fix is found.

Common sense?
