macOS Sierra freeze on iMac late 2009 using Safari

Hey guys,

Since the installation of macOS Sierra on my iMac 27 inch late 2009, I'm experiencing freezes of the computer with the following symptoms:

- the freeze occurs when I scroll a webpage in Safari.

- The mouse cursor still moves but I can't click and manipulate the system ; the keyboard doesn't work, as well.

- A force reboot is mandatory to recover.

- I can establish a ssh connection from my MacBook to the iMac, suggesting that Darwin is still running well.

- The log indicates "userspace_watchdog_timeout.spin report for WindowServer version", suggesting that the problem is related to a crash of the WindowServer.

Somebody here with the same machine has the same problem?

Thanks!

Hey guys,

I have a good news. I asked through my bug report when this problem is supposed to be fixed.

Bug report team told me that the bug is still under investigation BUT they say also that I should test this issue on macOS 10.12.5.

Hopefully, a fix will be proposed in the coming macOS 10.12.5 update. 🙂

If you read the thread you would know we have multiple 2010 machines that have this issue, and have been working with very very senior support staff and engineering to get this resolved. The "existing case with engineering" is mine.. We bought the new 27" with the expectation of the 15 days to return IF we had issues. We have not had issues with that one (except TimeMachine not working), but by following this thread and a crap load of trial and error I believe it's with the driver for the older ATI/AMD Radeon chips, the post by RudolfApple got me concerned because ATI had 2 chipset families, and I assumed the issue was with the driver for the older chip family, and his post was for the newer chip family - the same exact graphics driver as the machine we just spent 3K on. The ONLY reason we bought a new machine was the frustration over this issue, others of use are just using Chrome with no issue, but Chrome ***** vs Safari.

You mean to tell everyone you bought a new iMac because of Safari freezing macOS?

I dislike Chrome just as much as the next Apple guy, but dam son wish we all lived in happy very very senior support staff land where retina iMacs rain down from heaven.

Hey rewozz, my US$ 3500 iMAC freezes like every 5 to 10 minutes when the graphics driver is operational, i.e. when I am not working in safe mode. But then the unit is so terribly slow and even sound and video playback does not work. I could have spent 1/3rd of the cost and have a faster then I have right now. I.e. the machine is rendered useless. It is not safari that just stalls, just about any app. Siri, Preferences, App Store, Maps, you name it and in case the computer rus a log it is always graphics processor issues, resets, kernel panics etc.

That same applies probably to stevesko64's boss and if you have spent a fortune on such machines and Apple renders them useless due to lack of support of the graphics accelerator in their most expensive iMAC's they apparently lack testing and sense of quality at least in production. I am working with Apple support on this issue.

The point Apple always made: unpack => switch on => work

Where is that reliability now?

Please provide a link on how to put the complaint officially in Anything we can do to get it on a higher agenda topic at Apple will be fine with me.

Sorry I wasn't clear. Mac OS Sierra is not hung but it appears that way because there is nothing that can be done from the keyboard or mouse (except move the cursor). Sierra will still recognize the key combination and generate the sysdiagnoise file in /var/tmp (as described in that macworld hint and at other sites). I was able to log into my "hung" Mac using the terminal from another Mac and move the sysdiagnoise file from /var/tmp to another location before rebooting. What I don't know is if Sierra cleans out /var/tmp during reboot, in which case the file wouldn't be there. My bug report was closed because it was a duplicate and the original appeared to be closed as well. I assume that Apple has determined the source of the problem and is working to fix it. I'm using Firefox in the meantime as it doesn't appear to hang.
