macOS Sierra freeze on iMac late 2009 using Safari

Hey guys,

Since the installation of macOS Sierra on my iMac 27 inch late 2009, I'm experiencing freezes of the computer with the following symptoms:

- the freeze occurs when I scroll a webpage in Safari.

- The mouse cursor still moves but I can't click and manipulate the system ; the keyboard doesn't work, as well.

- A force reboot is mandatory to recover.

- I can establish a ssh connection from my MacBook to the iMac, suggesting that Darwin is still running well.

- The log indicates "userspace_watchdog_timeout.spin report for WindowServer version", suggesting that the problem is related to a crash of the WindowServer.

Somebody here with the same machine has the same problem?

Thanks!

VIN,iMac (27-inch Late 2009), macOS Sierra (10.12)

Bergi,

I just finished cleaning up my iMac Late 2009. I have the following:

Java

Flash Player

Flip4Mac

Trusteer

Silverlight

Google Chrome

It took me awhile, and a lot of help, but I have now eliminated my problems by uninstalling the above..

I suggest you read these threads:

Bergi, have patience. There are wonderful people here who will help you if you listen to what they say.

Good luck ! :¬)

onwprivateidaho, look at the above post that I made, the one above yours.

If you have 3rd party adware or malware installed, you are slowing down your Mac, and causing scrolling.

You may have a decision to make, either accept your scrolling and slowdown problems, or speed up Safari by uninstalling your 3rd party software.

If you are using Flash Player in Safari and/or Chrome, you have another decision to make. Either uninstall Java, Flash Player, and Chrome to provide security offered by Mac OS but not able to view some video content, or keep Flsh, Java, and Chrome but expose your Mac to internet vulnerabilities.

I had the problem, I uninstalled, and no more issues.

2 days. It's running great, and I am happy.

I am not going to make it a problem until it becomes a problem. Why?

Because I do not have Flash, Silverlight, Chrome, or Java installed, so I have Mac OS security. Mac OS security cannot be taken away from me as long as I do not click-on and open pop-ups or stuff in email. Oh, maybe something may happen, but I'll check every now and then with Matwarebytes https://www.malwarebytes.com/antimalware/mac/.

And I don't have Trusteer checking on everything and adding time to what I do in Safari.

So, ClarkDV, I do not expect issues. But, I now know what to do to get rid of issues.

Good luck with you! :¬)

Webhead,

Why? I asked because I wanted to know if your solution has been tested for weeks or just days. If you read over the threads on here about this issue, you'll see many, many people who have also come up with solutions only to come back a week or two later and say that they celebrated prematurely and that the issue had returned.

So a solution is only actually a solution when some months later the issue still hasn't returned.

Like I said, I'm on 25 days and counting with my "solution". Notice the quotation marks, I won't come on here and announce a solution until I'm double dog sure the issue is gone. I do that to help the others who come here. I will try a solution that has been working for a long time before I'll try one that has been working for days. That's just good troubleshooting procedure.

I hope you come back in a few weeks and announce that your issues haven't returned.
