Since upgrading to macOS Sierra, when I try to open Adobe Illustrator CS5, I get the message, To open “Adobe Illustrator CS5” you need to install the legacy Java SE 6 runtime. When I click on more info it opens a blank page. Can somebody tell me how to remedy/resolve/install this?

You are absolutely correct. Apple doesn't offer the SDK—hasn't in many years—only the JRE. Since Oracle bought SUN, they can't.
The JRE meets the needs for those of us running Adobe CS5 & 6, Finale 2014.5, MasterWriter 2, SmartScore and many other 32bit apps that still run in High Sierra — if you have the JRE 6.
The 2015-001 installer works in OS 10.13 but not 10.13.1.
I must confess that I have never encountered a Mac app that required the SDK instead of the JRE, development tools excepted (the earlier post about LibreOffice is wrong on that point).
Blurb might want to consider updating to 64bit. As Apple has announced that OS 10.14 will drop 32 bit, it's way past time.
BTW, I was responding to the original post that began this thread.

I just purchased a 2015 MacBook and was having the same issue running Photoshop as Tony. Your Java 2015 link worked for me as well. Thanks. However, before that I installed Java 8, thinking that is what I needed. I'm not sure what Jave 8 does. Is there a reason to keep it or should I uninstall it? Did it replace an earlier version that was already installed?

Java 6 is only needed for legacy apps that won't run without it (they ignore newer versions).
You would only need Java 8 for web sites that won't work properly without it. Otherwise, there's normally no good reason to have it installed.
Java 8 consists of two files. The main package which contains all pieces related to Java 8, and an alias that appears as an icon in the System Preferences. Delete the following two files to remove Java 8.
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin
/Library/PreferencePanes/JavaControlPanel.prefPane

I am not comfortable doing anything with Terminal so another solution would be appreciated.

I went to install Java For OSX 2014-001 Software and got this message, java for OS X 2014-00 can't be installed on this disk. A newer version of this package is already installed? Installation Type & Installation are grayed out.
What do I do now? I still can't open PhotoShop or any of my Adobe software programs. I need to get this resolved ASAP!
