macOS Sierra FileVault enabled freezing at login

My MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) has been consistently freezing at login with FileVault enabled on Yosemite, El Capitan and now Sierra (all clean-installed). When the login screen appears I can eventually type a password and log in but everything is extremely slow and unresponsive. I tried turning FileVault on and off but it would help only temporarily. Now that this issue returned on Sierra again I'm starting to get worried. Any ideas / pointers for a fix?

I recently started using MacBook Pro 15inch (2011) from work — I was surprised to see that there were no problems whatsoever on that machine despite having FileVault enabled. I am therefore also starting to suspect that it might be a hardware problem...

Well, everything worked fine on my MacBook Pro as well, but then I installed the latest security update (2016-003) for El Capitan (10.11.6) which came out last week. Since then the login hangs.

I recommend not to install that update 🙂

My MacBook Pro was sent off twice by Apple to repair this problem was not resolved. They replaced the MacBook Pro with a new one last weekend.

Today I've received my Macbook and they have replaced I/O Board. Issue has been fixed.

Installed the newest MacOS Sierra 10.12.4 update on my macbook pro today and it looks like the problem is solved. No problems at login with filevault enabled.

Can anybody confirm this?

I can confirm too and paradoxically the boot seems even (a bit) more fast than before.

The latest update to MacOS Sierra 10.12.4 resolved the issue for me.

I can confirm too! Software based error. Lucky they fixed it i was about to change the io board...
