Bluetooth not connecting on iOS 10 and OS sierra

I just bought a iphone 7, apple watch 2 and I updated my computer to sierra yesterday.

I wanted to do the auto unlock with my watch, but my phone is not connecting to the Mac with bluetooth. it wants to connect and the phone appears in the bluetooth settings, it says on my phone to pair if the numbers are the same and then it "fails to connect". so im lost and I can't use my watch.

I have reset my watch (by unpairing), iphone (by restting all settings) and turned restarted my computer.

it seems like the "it just works era" for apple is over.

There is no reason to "pair" you iPhone to you Mac.

The functions that require bluetooth (namely AirDrop, Handoff, and AutoUnlock) do happen over bluetooth connection, but they are not "paired". So, even though it does not list your devices as connected in Settings or System Preferences as a devices being "paired" they are communicating. This communication is done via iCloud servers, local wifi networks, and bluetooth.

iPhone and Mac Bluetooth pairing.

If you notice, in Apple's article Use Continuity to connect your Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch - Apple Support it does not list "pairing" as a requirement for setting up Handoff. The word "pair" does not appear anywhere on the article. This is because "pairing" is not needed for this function. It does, however, require that bluetooth is simply turned on as well as wifi, handoff, and iCloud being signed in.

So, if you are having trouble with any of these features, and your bluetooth is turned on, ensure that the other settings are set up as needed.

OK. After a bit of trawling, I've found a temporary fix...

Go to Settings>Personal Hotspot and change the Wi-Fi password from the default, and switch on the Hotspot

Switch off Wi-Fi

Try pairing again

I had the iPhone plugged into the MacBook at the time, and I'm not sure whether that's crucial to the process! This only works when the hotspot is enabled, but at least they are talking now.

Unfortunately, this did not work for me. The Bluetooth on my MacBook Pro (running Sierra) "sees"my iPhone 7 (running iOS 10.0.2) but the Bluetooth on my iPhone does not "see" my MacBook. I can force them to pair by telling my MacBook to pair with my iPhone and then accepting the pairing request on my iPhone. Unfortunately the link between the two never works. If I try to establish the connection from my MacBook, I get an error on the MacBook stating that the "Network is unavailable." If I try to make the connection from my iPhone I get an error stating "Connection Unsuccessful".

Barry,

Somewhere between getting my new iPhone 7 and updating my MacBook to Sierra, the Messages coming and going through my iPhone stopped being sent to my Mac. Then when I got my Apple Watch, I tried to use it to unlock my Mac, but my Mac gave me an error stating it could not communicate with my Watch. I knew Continuity played an important role in both the message sync'ing and the Mac unlocking so I checked out the requirements for Continuity. The requirements included Bluetooth so I made the (incorrect) assumption that my Mac needed to be paired with my iPhone and Watch. Based on your input, I know I was wrong about pairing, but I still have the problems with the Messages not sync'ing between my iPhone and my Mac and the fact that my Mac says it can't communicate with my Watch.

Thank you for your help.

I have had that issue off and on with pairing my iPhone6+ since iOS9 but got much worse in iOS10. Funny thing is when my thumbprint reader works and apps are more buggy then my bluetooth pairing/functions are terrible. When my thumbprint reader is nearly useless and my apps work with minimal issues then my bluetooth seems to function better.. hasn't been a happy medium since iOS9 which was more often the bluetooth was working situation.

Fresh load of 10.11 El Capitan and my MacBook Pro (15" mid 2012) ran flawless with no issues and being a tech I did extensive testing of all functions (2.3GHz i7, 16GB RAM, SSD). I have a bluetooth MS mouse, and bluetooth Phillips headset that worked very well. I updated to Sierra 10.12 and began having issues with both my mouse and headset. Additionally my internet access has been sluggish or very buggy. Reading up on common Sierra issues I decided to try a fresh install to eliminate the issue being caused by an upgrade install. Many performance/glitches and app issues were resolved including boot up & shutdown stopped having hang pauses. It however did not do much for the performance of my wifi or bluetooth.

I am working on investigating the drivers and service functions of Sierra to see if I can find the source of the issues. Maybe another tech already found a solution but I have not stumbled on to it yet. Good luck in solving this and hopefully Apple will release a fix for Sierra and iOS to resolve these problems...

Update, I flushed out a bunch of system preference and user profile preference files related to anything bluetooth, wifi, usb, audio, and anything suspicious. Rebooted and reconnected my headset and so far no issues with bluetooth & wifi. I did reset my SMC yesterday so not sure if that had any impact with the preference flushing. Only thing I didn't do was run the debug reset on the bluetooth.

FYI for the tech inclined, apple used the same broadcom wifi & bluetooth combo card has been having similar issues in other devices. I have an Asus transformer that had similar problems in windows 10, but the resolve for that is modifying the driver settings for the combo card. Why Apple used this same combo card is beyond me... pay all this money and they use the same buildup I find anywhere... very disappointing.. (if I find out they even used realtek garbage audio and network I might just go BSD on an Asus.. at least they try to avoid realtek or build up a setup that allows the cheap garbage to run decently well).

The Bluetooth & Wifi issues in Mac OS X 10.12 Sierra are going to have to be resolved by Apple fix patching it. Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan has 0 issues with it. I repaired my iPhone with my car and it helps a little at first but I am finding the pairing issues are with my iPhone and nt the devices. The issues don't seem to happen with my daughter's 5s. I also have reason to believe it is not a hardware issue on my iPhone6+ because rebooting it helps resolve them (temporary bandaide). Whatever the devs are doing at Apple since loosing Steve Jobs they need to pull their heads out their rear and get back to quality!
