Safari is not showing images at random on Tumblr. (image inside)

Since the update to Safari 10 and macOS Sierra my mac is 'randomly' not showing images on Tumblr. I say random because sometimes it will load all, and sometimes it won't load half of the images. After a reload other images won't load.

When I restart Safari it will work properly but after one or two minutes it's both on the timeline and on the user-pages. For example, my page looks like this:

User uploaded file

Any ideas how to solve? I've looked on the discussion boards but nothing recent is showing up..

Edit: I forgot to mention it is on ALL user-pages I visit. And my timeline of course is unique. I have no problem loading any of this in Safari on my iOS devices or in the Tumblr iOS apps.

Thanks for the help Eric, sadly none of these solve the problem. With a little help of the developer menu I have narrowed the issue down to a .js file that Tumblr uses:

User uploaded file

In this case it took 1:08 minutes to load and I've seen it up to 5:30 minutes. I tried making a new user-account on my iMac to test if it had anything to do with the user setting but on a fresh account the problem appears as well.

It also is an issue on Chrome so it might be macOS Sierra related? Would I need to reinstall?

In safe mode it also happens.

I got so frustrated I did a reinstall of my macOS by hitting CMD + R when booting and clicking "Reinstall macOS Sierra" this way my data was saved and if macOS was broken it would be fixed. After about 30 minutes of reinstalling it went well for 5 to 10 minutes but the same issues started appearing again.

After that I tried disabling all Safari extensions like you said (heck I even deleted them, I only had OnePassword and an Adblock). Same thing happened.. it went well for 5 to 10 minutes before the issues reappeared. I also appears on Chrome and Firefox.

It is specifically Tumblr and the crash always look like this:

User uploaded file

If it's related to Tumblr why am I the only one experiencing this? 😟 It frustrates me greatly.

Try running this program in your normal account , then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

It seemed to help for a while but that is not a solution either. I have NO IDEA what's causing this. I made a little video of my timeline to demonstrate: https://youtu.be/E1H1pvm9Bbc

So far I have:

  • deleted all history
  • "repaired" my macOS installation
  • deleted all extensions
  • disabled all extensions
  • disabled all plugins

EtreCheck, as recommended by EricRoot, didn't seem to have any alerting issues.. It seems to appear less frequently now but it still happens as the video demonstrates. Will it be solved if I wipe my hard disk and reinstall everything? Not really looking forward doing that.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library./Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

Nope nope nope 😟 😟 Didn't work either. I waited a few days for the Sierra update and even after the update its still not working.

Read somewhere to flush my DNS so I tried that and that didn't work. I did get two error reports on webkit last week but i can't find how to reinstall it.

This is annoying me to bits and I've noticed it is on some other image heavy sites as well but less frequently. Should I reinstall my mac?

Oct 26, 2016 5:59 AM in response to Eric Root

Yes I tried a guest account before. With the guide I created an admin account, logged in, (immediately changed the mouse speed 😠), first thing I did was open Safari, go to Tumblr.com and log in. Within 30 seconds some of the images wouldn't load anymore. If I'm correct this would verify this is a system wide problem?

I thought I was able to recreate this issue op Chrome as well but I fail to do so this morning. Seems to work flawlessly for the last two hours.

On a related note: Safari has become "unbearably" slow since the update yesterday. Not the loading speed but things like hover-over effects on buttons and such, even after I rebooted. (Youtube, Facebook, Flickr...) No strange CPU usage.
