Fix: iPhone 7 Battery Draining Fast

I FIXED THE SAME PROBLEM ON BATTERY DRAIN ON MY iPHONE 7 PLUS! I had the same problem on my new iPhone 7 Plus 128gb phone running iOS 10.02 and here is how I fixed it!

First of all the way you know you have a problem (and also the way you know you have fixed the problem) is when you go to Settings>General>Battery and scroll all the way down and look at TIME SINCE LAST FALL CHARGE. If your usage time is the same as your standby time you know you have a problem and basically the iPhone is running continuously and not going into standby mode. THIS USUALLY IS BECAUSE AN APP ON YOUR PHONE IS MALFUNCTIONING AND YOUR PHONE IS RUNNING THE APP CONTINUOUSLY. You might get clues to this under the list of apps under BATTERY USAGE on same page but that wasn't helpful to me as it doesn't seem to show which app is running continuously.

Here is what I did to fix the problem and any one of these might fix it and I am not sure which one actually fixed it so here are things to try....

FIRST OF ALL MAKE A GOOD BACKUP BY CONNECTING YOUR iPHONE TO YOUR COMPUTER AND USING ITUNES.

1. If you are running Facebook on your phone then delete it and reinstall it as this app is one of the biggest culprits. Takes 5 minutes and might fix it.

2. Then do a soft reset....the way you do a soft reset on the iPhone 7 or 7 Plus is DIFFERENT THAN PREVIOUS iPHONES. Due to the new home button requiring power to work, Apple has changed the buttons used to force a restart. You now need to hold the wake andvolume down buttons at the same time. After a few seconds of holding in the buttons, the Apple logo will appear on your iPhone's display, indicating it has restarted, and you should be back in business. This takes only a minute or so..

3. I then "Reset all Settings" by going to Settings>General>Reset >Reset all Settings. AGAIN MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GOOD UP TO DATE BACKUP DONE BEFORE YOU DO THIS. I didn't think this step did much and this doesn't erase content but you lose all your settings like wifi connections and passwords etc so i decided I didn't want to lose them all so then went to next step. This takes about 10 minutes.

4. I then connected my iPhone 7 Plus to my computer and restored my backup with iTunes. This takes an hour or two as I have a lot of apps and data.

5, I then went to Settings and scrolled down and turned off the "Allow Notifications" on each app that I could live without notifications. takes 10 minutes...

6. I then charged my computer fully and VOILA it was fixed and the way I know this is I went to Settings>General>Battery and scroll all the way down and look at TIME SINCE LAST FALL CHARGE and NOW THE STANDBY TIME IS MUCH HIGHER THAN THE USAGE TIME AND THE BATTERY IS WORKING FINE AND NOT DRAINING ANYMORE THAN NORMAL.

Sorry that i don't know exactly which step solved my problem but you can do this all in a couple of hours and it saved me from returning my iPhone! Maybe if others try these steps you could narrow it down and let people know which one worked. Reminder backup your iPhone to your computer before you do any of the major steps above. Hope this helps.

I posted my problem in so many places asking for help that I forgot everywhere I did it so after finally finding the issue and fixing it I wanted to post my experiences, now I can do just that here.

Finally found the Culprit this Wednesday after a month and 4 different phones. It was iCloud for windows installed in my laptop... Yes believe it or not.

I arrived Wednesday to my office but different than any other day I didn't turn on my laptop and immediately began working on a new project. When I checked my phone around 10am I noticed that for the first time in almost a month it was working normal at my office. I just remembered that the only thing different was not having my laptop on so to verify my new theory I turned it on and left it on besides my phone for about 30 minutes, when I got back to it, the battery standby and usage has increased 30 minutes each, so the problem started as soon as I turned my laptop on. After turning off again and verify that the issue stopped as soon as I turned I off I then moved to see what could have changed in my laptop right around the day the problem began.

It was an easy finding because I hadn't installed anything new on it for the past couple of months except iCloud for Windows PC looking to be able to easily transfer my pictures to my laptop. So I Uninstalled it and reboot the laptop and the problem disappeared for good. After 2 days of that I can confirm that at least in my case, that was it.

So if by any chance you have iCloud installed in your Computer, just get rid of that POS until Apple work on it. I notified Apple about it but who knows when it may get fixed if ever.

Have you updated iTunes since you removed iCloud for Windows? Just asking because as you may well know, when you update iTunes it brings by default (or at least it does to me) the option to install iCloud for Windows, so just one thing to discard before you enter into panic mode.

Now, there is something else going on as 2 more iPhones at my home have done the same but it was just one day, first was my littler daugther's iPhone 7, she called me saying that she had the same issue, at that point I already knew about iCloud for Windows and have fixed it so it didn't make any sense, so I just told her to put the phone on Airplane Mode, then turn the phone off and on again and once it finish booting up to turn off Airplane mode, it fixed her issue.

So, last week, on Thursday, my other daugther's iPhone 7 plus began doing the same and I simply told her to the steps above and that was it, no more issues.

So as you can see, it has happened even without iCloud for Windows installed, but the only difference is that it gets fixed with a simple reboot and/or Airplane Mode on/off, with the original issue and the one talked about here there was no fix, you could reboot, Airplane mode on/off but nothing fixed it, the only thing that has worked for me for the past 2 weeks after suffering from the issue for a month was uninstalling iCloud for Windows.

Got some bad news too. I unistalled iCloud from my Windows laptop and since there was no battery drain until today.

After 72 mins of normal working, my usage and standby time started to increase together. Did a hard reset, my iPhone 7 seems to be working right now. Also I deleted my Mail and iCloud Drive apps. And what I noticed is when this drain's happening I always stay connected to a Wi-Fi network. And if it happens again, gonna try that airplane mode fix you suggested.

Hi guys, I've been experiencing the same as you are and I'm very disappointed with it. My battery drains so fast. I've called apple care about this since I am not in the country where I purchase the Iphone and having a lot of problems. My battery is draining even if I'm not using it and I did the solutions you have told in this discussion like resetting, restoring, uninstalling icloud for windows but it does the same. I hope we will be able to find a solution about this. Btw is it fixed in IOS 10.3 ? Please let me know. Thanks

Hi, I've still been experiencing battery issues after uninstalling icloud for windows. I've tried resetting twice, rebots, optimazations and still, my battery drains quickly even I'm not using it. I'm very disappointed with my iphone 7. Have it been working well know in IOS 10.3? Please let me know. Thank you

That's a question for Apple, not for me, don't you think?

Like I said, believe it or not, nothing stopped the battery drain, not 3 new phones (4 in total), not any Apple Tech troubleshooting, not a factory reset and setting up as a new phone, nothing, once I entered my work office it began doing it until I left the office in the afternoon. It just stopped that day I didn't turn on my laptop, then I realized that it was something on the laptop and the only thing different has been installing iCloud for Windows so after removing it everything went back to normal, no more battery drain for the past 3 weeks since I Uninstalled it after suffering from it every single day for a month.

Now what do you think it may be if it wasn't iCloud for Windows? ;)

I'm not sure if this will help others, but I believe my issue has been resolved. I had tried everything listed in this forum except the iCloud on Windows because I don't have a Windows computer that I've been logged into. I finally went up to the Apple Store and they were just about to give me a new phone when they suggested doing a DFU to restore. So, we did that while we were there. I'm now 10 days post DFU restore and no signs of issues. I actually just completed a 51 hour cycle without charging (before doing this I was getting about 20 with the same amount of usage). If you're still having issues, I might considered giving this a shot. It's worked so far for me. If I have the problem again I will post an update.

iPhone 7+ running 10.2.1

Feb 14, 2017 7:15 AM in response to Riemi

I did not jailbreak my phone. As far as I know it won't hurt the warranty, but maybe look a little more into it before doing it. The Genius actually did the DFU restore, although I've done them myself before (not sure why I didn't think to do it this time around). Here is a link for instructions on doing the DFU restore.

Also, after it was restored I set my phone up as new. It's no fun to lose the data, and for me my Apple Watch health data, but I didn't want to risk anything transferring over from a backup. Hope it helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I don't think that the process is 50-50. I would think maybe it's more people not familiar with the process and not familiar with troubleshooting. I would suggest making sure your phone is running the latest software (10.2.1) and iTunes is up to date. Like I said, I've personally done DFUs myself and it is something that they showed me at the Apple Store, so I think it's safe.

If possible, maybe take it to an Apple Store and have them show you or do it for you. If not, the decision is up to you whether or not you're comfortable trying it.

I too want to thank you desiadri for your suggestion! So far after several weeks it is still running well- 100% battery left after being off the charger for 6+ hours! I was getting ready to dump the iphone and go back to android with its crappy battery life, but it was still better than what I was experiencing with my iphone draining 6-8% per hour! I'm happy with my iphone again! I appreciate your posting this on as many forums as you can so we can all have it figured out! Hopefully Apple will too someday...

I'm glad it has also worked for you. I'm sure that if more people with similar issues do the same, most of them will also fix their issue.

There is always a chance an issue that looks similar or the same is caused by other things but I think that EVERYBODY with the same or similar issue should Uninstall iCloud for Windows first, reboot or add a network reset and see if it helps, then obviously report this to Apple so they finally do something about this obvious issue with such an important piece of software that they seem to be ignoring so far.
