The round magnetic disc at the end of my charging cable makes a "ticking" or clicking sound at what sounds like the beat of a clock. It started recently and has not been charging the watch. I tried to plug the cable into the USB port on the MacBook Pro, rather than the wall, but it still clicks and doesn't charge. Is my charger shot?

I suggest that you contact Apple Support (mail-in service may be available) or make a Genius Bar reservation with a view to having your Apple Watch and Magnetic Charging Cable checked and, if recommended by Apple, serviced / replaced (whether under warranty, if eligible, or via chargeable repair service):

i knew you'd come through! I have a suspicion that the charger is the culprit as the clicking sound happens whether it's magnetically attached to the watch or not.
I'll try an alternate charger at an Apple location today and see what happens.
