CD/DVD Drive--Not Reading(?)

Ever since I purchased my MacBook Pro, it has refused to load or play numerous audio cds (even undamaged ones) & software. Today, it refused to load my AppleCare CD!

Anyone know what's up with this?

I'm having the same issue with my MacBook Pro and I haven't had it one month (I just got the first credit card bill about three days ago). It loads and plays DVDs no problem (so far). It also won't erase a CD-RW and I've had to force quit Disk Utility numerous times. The error number is get is 0x80020022. I'm guessing a trip to repair is in order?

I've got the same thing going on with mine - less than 3 months old. At first, I thought is was bad/scratched CDs because it was occasional- read some & spit others back out at me. Then I tried to load my new copy of Appleworks. Spit that back out. I'll be visiting the store for repair after I back up my HD. I've been seeing a lot of similar posts while trying to figure out if this is an issue for repair or not.

I've had read problems with my optical drive in my 2Ghz MBP since new also. In three months the drive was replaced under warranty twice and the problem still remained. Once at an Apple store and once sent into Apple. Last week I took it back to the Apple store for the third time and told them I didn't want the same drive put in again since this was not fixing the problem. They agreed it was a frustrating issue and decided to install a recently upgraded drive for a MacBook Pro dual Core 2. Finally the problem is fixed. For the first time in 5 months since buying it I can play any music CD I put in. This is the model number of the optical drive they installed:
HL-DT-ST DVDRW GWA4080MA
This seems to be the only sure fix, it was for me. Hope this helps.

Go to your system profiler and click on Disc Burning to see what model drive you have. The MBP core 2 models in the Apple store have something like UJ-857. The drive they installed in mine is a replacement for this. You need to ask for this drive: HL-DT-ST DVDRW GWA4080MA.
By the way, I even took one of my music CDs into the Apple store and tried playing it on several Mac Book Pros, MacBooks, and iMacs. None of them could read the CD and it's in near perfect condition. Only the Mac Pro tower would play it. The tech at the genius bar told me the drives are having problems and the one they were installing in mine was the fix. So far she was right, I haven't had a read error since.

Very true, I have had my MacBook Pro for 4 months now and have had many problems with audio cds, not reading and getting stuck. I just thought it was because they were well used and cheap recordable cds, being a DJ they do tend to get scratched easily. Now after spending £300 on Propellor Heads well known REASON music production programme, straight out of the box not one of the cds are readable on my machine. My friend has a brand new Samsung £700 laptop, one third of the price of mine, and we are now using the programme on that. My beaten up 6 year old desk top reads the cds fine so I think I know where the problem lies, so I will be on the phone to Apple asap.

Has anyone had any problems getting theres changed?

This is very frustrating to hear. For the second time I have sent my laptop away to have internal repairs done for loud noises and poor performance. The first time they incorrectly replaced my hard drive. Most recently, both fans, RAM, Operating System and Optical Drive were replaced. The fans were making much noise and the Optical Drive was performing poorly. Now I have been having an extremely hard time importing CDs into iTunes. It has been the biggest headache. I am constantly having to Force Quit because it can't read the disc. And yes, these are discs in good shape. What is more frustrating is that after reading this forum and knowing I just had an Optical Drive replaced, one would assume that I received the working one. Unfortunately I received the same UJ-857. Why do they do this to us? I guess I have to send away again. I just hope the Genius Bar folks know what I am talking about when I say I want the working Optical Drive installed.

I had problem with what appeared to be flakey DVD reader in my new (12/06) MBP C2D (Matsushita drive) and finally found the problem: Whenever I have Parallels running, the DVD player, on the Mac side, is useless. However as soon as I suspend Parallels, the DVD works perfectly: same with playing music CDs. Parallels must take some of the resources that DVD player needs to functon on the Mac side (and of course, drive is useless, for burning, from windows side) Wish the Parallels people had told me this!! I talked with Apple phone support which didn't have a clue. hope this helps some people.

Just wondered - I am having problems reading CDs with my Core Duo MBP 15, and also getting uneven DVD burns (burned surface looks different from middle to edge). Have you guys been experiencing the "wake in bag" problem, where your machine wakes with the lid closed, and comes out scorching hot?

The reason I ask is because heat is the #1 enemy of semiconductor lasers like the ones in optical drives, and I wonder if the wake-in-bag problem is killing our drives. I've experienced it several times and the machine does get very, very hot.

When you were having problems with your optical drive, did they get worse over time? I ask because I didn't have a problem with mine at first, but now it objects to importing certain cd tracks (usually the last one on the disk.) All of the cd's are brand new and look pristine. When it won't import the track, it spins, stops, spins, stops, and on and on until I force it to eject the cd. I have the UJ-857 and I wonder if it will get worse and worse.
Thanks.
