Message Read Receipt Bug in iOS 10?!

Hi,

While I have experienced this several times since upgrading to iOS 10 (I had a 6S and now have an iPhone 7 Plus) I am not finding other reports of it which I find puzzling.

I have a few friends who have read receipts turned on. I have long seen (as I should) when they have read my iMessage. However, I am certain the following has happened a SEVERAL times since the iOS 10 upgrade.

1. Several iMessages will show as "read" and the time in a thread. The last will remain as "delivered", never change to "read" yet the recipient will respond to the message messaging claims they have not read yet. Clearly, it was read yet a read receipt isn't displaying for all iMessages. That final message never gets a read receipt, then they resume again as the conversation continues.

2. Just this morning problem two occured yet again so I know I'm not crazy. I sent a iMessage this morning. A moment later it clearly showed "Read 7:14am". I went about my business but it was odd for this person to not respond promptly. I looked back at the thread and now the same message was showing as "delivered". The read receipt was gone.

Well, the recipient was busy and responded an hour later. When they sent their response the read receipt of "Read 7:14am" returned. They had already read it. Why the read receipt appeared, changed back to "deliveried" and then reappeared only when they responded escapes me.

I am positive both of these these have happen several times. I know major changes were made to messaging. I can't imagine I'm the only user noticing this. Thoughts?

I also have an Apple Watch. I have just upgraded my phone and set it up as new instead of via restore in the hope it would fix it but still seeing the same issue, though in different ways - today I had a message which showed as read yet in the messages app on my Mac, it shows as delivered.

I can’t remember if it started at the same time as getting the watch though, but am wondering if it might have some relevance to devices?

I also have issues where messages come in out of order if I am texting at the same time someone is replying to me, like their reply will be before my question. If I close out the messages app and then go back in it will re-order them correctly but then starts doing it again eventually. I also tried toggling iMessage off and then back on and it will then work ok for a few days but it wreaks havic with the syncing of my watch and phone for a good 6 hours when I do that so I don’t like to. Because of the syncing issues when I turn off iMessage it leads me to believe even more that it is an issue between multiple devices. I hope Apple fixes it in with an update soon. Maybe a lot of people just don’t notice it because they don’t have read messages turned on or have multiple devices. It’s baffling for sure.

When it happens, check the 'send read receipt' settings for that contact. I found that even though I have it turned ON for only 2 people, it keeps turning itself OFF. I have had to reset it (to be ON) about 5 times for my husband but every few days it's back to being OFF. His phone does the same thing so it seems like the issue is the settings reverting to being OFF, not the actual indicator on the imessage.

I'm having problems with my iPhone 6s and read iMessages. Mine will also say read then after a while change to delivered. Is this a common problem, is Apple aware?

No, it's not a common problem. Assuming all the other people in the thread have have done as I've suggested and eithre contacted Apple Support or submitted feedback, yes, Apple is aware of it. No, no one here would know what or when Apple plans to do anything about it.

Submit your feedback. The more people who report an issue, the more likely it is to get attention.

I have had the same issue for the past year or so but I always thought it had something to do with my Apple Watch. I will see a message as read then change back to delivered on my phone yet my watch will always display correctly as read. It’s almost like my watch takes priority. My question is does anyone else who is having this issue have Apple Watches? Also just last night I started having a new issue. My girlfriend has read receipts turned on for my texts but not for all, so up until 6:00 last night I was getting the read receipts and then it stopped working. We looked at all her settings and everything was still correct. The only thing different is that she got an Apple Watch but she has had it since Christmas and the issue just started. She did go downstairs and leave her phone upstairs and was texting from her watch while I believe out of Bluetooth range from her phone so she would have been on WiFi. It is around that time that the trouble started. I truly believe it has something to do with things somehow getting lost between 2 connected devices on the same Apple ID that use iMessage. She tried rebooting her phone and watch and no change. I am at a loss on what to try next.

Thank you Meg. Actually a search of "iMessage Read Receipt" and "Read Receipt" did not bring up any threads mentioning this issue. Nor did I experience it at all before iOS 10 so it's interesting it has been a known problem. Appreciate the background but surprised this wasn't resolved long ago.

I am not finding any solutions so perhaps someone can share one with us.

Thanks!

I have not tried the "reboot" but will if I must. Just last night I had a iMessage show "read: 8:23pm", then go back to "delivered" and this morning says "read:yesterday".

Yes it was read, at the time you told me before you decided to remove the read receipt. How this is not resolved escapes me. Especially when they redesigned messaging for iOS10 one would think this "bug" would have come up as something that needs resolution.

Have you reported it to Apple? It's, as best I can tell, an uncommon, bordering on rare problem. So, whatever is causing in could, quite possible never have come up for any of the beta testers. Rare, intermittent bugs are about the hardest to troubleshoot. And, when they're in a non-critical feature, they're probably going to be lower priority, assuming Apple is aware of it.
