Random Shutdown on Macbook Pro (15" mid 2014)

i have a Macbook Pro (Retina, 15', Mitte 2014) with El Capitan installed (10.11.6 (15G1004)).

It keeps randomly shutting down. This happens like this:

1. Screen turns black (does not turn off, logo-light is still on)

2. Fans accelerate,

3. After 5-10 secods, it turns off (screen & apple-logo turns off)

4. i can boot normally. no crash report.

I was not yet able to reproduce the problem. ive tried a lot:

- happens with or without power cord plugged in

- resetting the smc does not change anything

- reinstalling OSX does not change anything

- it feels like it happens mostly when having high CPU Usage, but running a benchmark (cinebench) to put pressure on the CPU does not automatically shut it down

- also happens with no CPU Usage at all (but fewer times)

What diagnostics can i provide to give you more detail?

What monitor tools are available to get more information about what happens?

Anybody encountered this... ever?

I'd appreciate your help!

I had the same Issue with the same machine.

In the end (I tried almost everything you can think of) I solved the problem by reapplying new thermal paste (Arctic Silver 5).

The shutdowns are caused by too much heat (emergency shut down) because of a bad thermal paste. Mine covered only about 50% of the CPU´s surface.

In fact, the temperatures showing in the temperature tools were not higher than normal, but reapplying thermal paste helped completely.

It´s easy in this model.

There are some youtube videos showing, how to to.

Ifixit is good for it too.

Hi everyone Same probleme with same computer Macbook Pro 15 mid 2014, my mac has been shut down randomly for few month now, I've just replaced the retina screen (antireflect issue) I thought my mac would be fixed after that, but no, it keeps going to shut down it makes me crazy ! i've been at the apple store for a diagnostic and they didn't find anything wrong !

Dec 13, 2017 8:27 AM in response to Cocomoko

I use Macs Fan Control to base both fan speeds on GPU temp and it seems to delay shut down a lot working on a table or surface but on lap or fabric it shuts down as fast. Temperature of GPU peeks very fast.

Here is a little summary of what I tried so far:

-Apple authorized service' deep diagnostic does not show anything wrong with hardware

-Applying new thermal paste does not fix issue

-Reinstalling OS does not fix issue

-Having my thunderbolt ethernet plugged in does not fix issue

-Issue not related to scale or resolution of screen

-Plugged in to power supply or on battery power does not change anything

-Reducing transparency effects in desktop does not do anything

Workarounds for now:

Having external HDMI monitor plugged in prevents issue

Having HDMI dummy plug (headless ghost) plugged in prevents issue

Booting in safe mode prevents issue

I am calling Apple now. Maybe Apple Canada is a little more comprehensive.

I will give update later.

Hi Everybody,

Me too I have the same issue with MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014).

Bootcamp Windows 10 is working great, no issue.

(This alone, tells me it is not a hardware issue, but rather a MacOS software issue)

When I connect the Thunderbolt / Ethernet connector, it is working great, no issue.

(it does need to have an Ethernet connection, just the connector is enough)

The last release of High Sierra 10.13.3, does not solve it. Still the issue.

Here is a food for thought:

1 - When we do a clean install of El Capitan, and check the content of the file:

/System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AirPortBrcm4360.k ext/Contents/Info.plist

we have the lines :

<key>IONameMatch</key>

<array>

<string>pci14e4,43ba</string>

<string>pci14e4,43a3</string>

<string>pci14e4,43a0</string>

<string>pci14e4,4331</string>

<string>pci14e4,4353</string>

</array>

2 - When we check the content of the same file on High Sierra :

<key>IONameMatch</key>

<array>

<string>pci14e4,4331</string>

<string>pci14e4,4353</string>

</array>

3 - When we start on Bootcamp / Windows 10 and check the version of the Wifi Hardware we see

Device PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_43A0&SUBSYS_0134106B&REV_03\80E600FFFF00000100

which is pci14e4,43A0

4 - One possible interpretation of this :

The MacOS Wifi driver on High Sierra, does not manage the hardware pci14e4,43a0

but only pci14e4,4331, pci14e4,4353

which could explain the crashes.

What do you think ?

Thanks guys.

I have the same problem on my MacBook Pro late 2013 2,6 GHz.

Problem started about one month ago.

Deactivating AppleThunderboltNHI.kext worked, but now thunderbolt drivers are disabled.

Anyway I am still able to attach a display using apple mini display to vga adapter plugged in the thunderbolt port.

Problems started after upgrading to High Sierra, I than downgraded to Sierra but nothig changed.

This is my third (and last) MacBook pro with harware problems, first two were GPU related (NVIDIA).

I'm really disappointed, Im a web developer, seems that these machines are not suited to work hard...

Really, really disappointed...

I'm having the exact same issue. My computer is no longer under Apple Care coverage and I'm wary of taking it to get it examined only to have the technicians fail to find any issues and have to shell out a lot of money for the tests. One similar question had someone say they did not experience the crashes when plugged into an external monitor.. could this give anyone a clue as to what the issue may be?
