Mac App Store keeps asking for password

I am logged into the MacAppStore on my iMac. Username and password are correct. I can wiew account information, a list of Apps I have bought etc.

I am also able to download new apps from the Mac AppStore, and I downloaded and installed MacOS Sierra a few days after it was released.

There is now an update to one of my Apps (Twitter). When I click "update", I am prompted to give the password for the Apple account the App was bought with (the same account as I am currently logged into the Mac AppStore with).

I enter the correct (and Yes, I am sure it is the correct password for that AppleID). However, instead of starting downloading the update, I am just again prompted to enter the password. Whatever I do, I can not get the updating proscess started. The AppStore just keeps asking for the password over and over again.

Am I doing something wrong? Or is this a bug in MacOS Sierra

As a curiosity, first I was asked for the password of my wifes appleID. I was not able to change this, I could only type in the "password" box. My wifes AppleID is linked to mine through Family sharing, but her AppleID has never been used to buy anything from MacAppStore. I had to click "view account information", enter my AppleID and password, and then I am asked for my password when I try to update the App.

iMac, macOS Sierra (10.12), null

Jumping on this, as I can't find any more recent, similar threads - I'm having this problem, but the updates are for iMovie and Photos. I can't delete either, nor do I really want to, as they're stock apps. I don't use either frequently, but having the insistent update notification pop up on my screen is annoying.

I want to update just to get it out of the way, but I can't, as I'm being asked for my password (I, too, am sure I'm using the right one) again and again and again.

Help, please.

Thanks Peachtree. Although the apps I was having the issue with were not purchased (iMovie and Garage Band), your suggestion prompted me to delete them from the Applications folder, and download them again. Way back when I had bought a MacBook 11" white, and used an old Apple ID on that computer. As I've upgraded machines, the old iMovie and Garage Band apps have still been linked to that old Apple ID. So, by deleting and downloading those apps under my current Apple ID this machine stopped asking for that old ID.

I am also having the same issue for updating the xcode, it is very important to update my xcode because of this issue my development work is completely stopped since one week, can anyone please tell me the solution to update my xcode? i already updated my OS to Sierra! it keeps on asking me to enter the password, that too asking with another apple ID. And it not allowing me to enter my apple ID into the input it's completely grayed out.😟

Yes, most annoying! I finally figured it out.

There must be meta-data with each app that gives the password you used when it was first loaded. This could have been several password iterations ago. In my case it was iMovie, GarageBand, and other apple apps, iTunes kept asking over and over again for my password.

If you don't remember what password you used when you loaded that app, or in most cases, fired up a new machine, the easiest thing to do is to trash the app (Applications/iMovie ... move to trash) then find it on iTunes and load it up again. It will now remember your current password.

I was having the same problem and was reluctant to delete apps. But people keep suggesting it so I tried it. I started with iMovie which I really don't use. Found it in Finder, and moved it to trash. The went to the app store, searched for it and "got" it. Took a little while to download but when it finished... no more "update" notifications for it. I'll be doing the same for the other ones when I have time. Hope this helps and gives you the courage to try it. Start with one that you don't use. Good luck!

I keep getting this notice. I guess its because I changed the apple ID, while the app Slack is installed when I used the other one. Now I can't update Slack, I keep receiving login window. This is really stupid.

Hey Apple, if you think that "free" app is not from my new apple ID, why don't you give an error or remove it? but keep letting me login?

This worked for me.

Open a terminal windows (Spotlight search for terminal ...).

At command prompt, sudo -s and enter admin password. In any case, if this doesn't work (user not in sudo file) get root access/login as root.

cd /

mkdir DISABLEDAPPS

mv /Applications/<name of app that won't update>.app DISABLEDAPPS/

Quit the app store.

Start the app store again.

When the update process doesn't see the old app, it asks for the password once and does the "update" ...

Worked for me, in any case.

Hi viking bear,

Thanks for your question. I understand you have been unable to update Twitter on your iMac. Were you able to update other apps in your Purchased list? Do you and your wife share the same Twitter handle? It sounds like the Twitter app is "registered" under your wife's Apple ID in the iTunes Store.

Does your wife have a separate user account on your iMac, or does she have an iPhone or iPad that she can access her iTunes Store purchases and see if she can update the Twitter app?

Alternatively, if the app is listed under your purchases, you can delete it and then download your past purchases. Here are a few resources with more information:

See your purchase history in the iTunes Store on a Mac or PC

While you are in the iTunes application on your iMac, I would also suggest checking your iTunes Store account billing information, just to make sure everything is up to date with your Family Sharing account. (You may need to re-enter your credit card's security code and expiration date.)

Change or remove your Apple ID payment information

macOS Sierra: Install, update, and uninstall apps

Delete music, movies, apps, and other content from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Download your past purchases

viking bear, after confirming who's Apple ID the Twitter app was initially downloaded under, checking the iTunes Store account billing info, and possibly deleting and downloading the app again, please reply back to this thread with any updates that you can regarding your issue.

Enjoy the rest of your evening.
