Set system font OS 6

I recently had to switch out my mom's classic Macintosh for another one (the last good working one I have). It is running System 6. She uses it to play one game - Webster's Revenge. On the previous machine, the font in the game was easy to read. On the Mac SE with System 6, it is much smaller and not a normal font. I have tried using the Views control panel, but it only changes the font in the folders. If anyone can guide me on this, your input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The SE is an M5011. I actually had to take the hard drive out of a Classic II and put it into the SE to make it work (both were running System 6). The game was being played on a Macintosh Plus (M0001A). The hard drive was pulled from a Macintosh Classic II (M4150). The problem is probably stemming from the fact that the Macintosh Plus is running on System 1 (I believe - it boots from a floppy).

Where (menus, dialogues, etc) would one find the difficult to read typeface? Does the problem appear when other programs are used?

What can be seen inside the System file (in the System Folder)? The Font/DA Mover utility can be used to view installed fonts (if necessary, in a System file on another disk, too). Remember, System 6 is different from System 7 (the System suitcase in a System 7 System Folder can be opened directly).

Fonts can be installed and removed by the Font/DA Mover.

You may also want to try to (re)install System 6.0.8 (directly from floppy disks) onto the hard disk in the Macintosh SE.

This looks like CHICAGO for all the labels & likely Times for the "letters"

There were not that many fonts on the systems back in 1985!

The original system software for a Macintosh Classic II was 7.0.1 (and this is the only supported version in an old Apple article System Software: Version Matrix, System 6.0.x to 7.0.1). Also, as you can see in System 6.0.8L: ReadMe File (8/95), a special system (6.0.8L) was used in some cases (please note the limitations regarding other computers).

Since you mentioned that the hard drive had been moved from the Classic II to the SE, is the system version 6.0.8L? If yes, it may not be a bad idea to try (System 6.0.3 or) a plain 6.0.8 on the SE. I do not know whether this would have any effect at all as far as the font problem is concerned, but it would at least rule out one unknown factor, and you would have a fresh (and supported) Macintosh SE system installation. Unless the SE is an FDHD variant, you would (normally) carry out the installation from (four) 800K floppy disks.

My disks arrived today. The problem I am having is figuring out how to get it installed. I put the original SE hard drive back in the machine, booted from the floppy, but the installer doesn't see the internal hard drive. Is there something I need to do to make it work?? Is it possible that the internal drive is bad (even though it spins up and the indicator light works)?? Any help here would be great. Thanks.

In the Installer, you can switch between disks, but if the hard disk is not shown at all, you will need some kind of utility. To begin with, try Disk First Aid on one of your system floppies; does that program detect the hard disk? If not, try Apple HD SC Setup (do not initialise; just check whether the hard disk is recognised).

If the aforementioned utilities do not see the hard disk, you could try a third-party program (such as Lido 7.5.6).

Addendum

A third-party utility can be useful for checking the SCSI bus. However, modifying an 800K system floppy to hold a program such as Lido 7.5.6 will require a bit of work since the space is limited (I assume that you are using a "normal " SE with only an 800K floppy drive). You should be able to use your Classic II for creating or modifying floppy disks, since that machine is capable of handling both 1.44 MB and 800K.

Do you have access to an external SCSI Zip 100 drive? Do you have another pre-1998 Macintosh computer with a floppy drive?

Generally speaking, downloading files for older Macintosh computers can be done on a modern Mac or PC with a USB floppy drive attached (but only on 1.44 MB floppy disks). Always keep the MacBinary (.bin) or BinHex (.hqx) encoding intact until on a suitable pre-1998 intermediate Mac. Once there, use StuffIt Expander to decode any downloaded files.
