no place to enter 2 step verification code after changing password

imac early 2009 osx 10.8.5

i updated my password (not apple id) about a week ago. ever since i've been getting the error message "this mac can't connect to icloud because of a problem with xxxx@xxxx.com" (my apple id which is my email address) "open icloud to fix this problem" with the "later" and the "icloud preferences" buttons as options. i click on the preferences option.

i then get the screen that says an apple id verification code is required. when that is texted to me there is no place to enter it on my mac! only my apple id and password. however if i try to log in straight from icloud.com, no problem. all i want to do is get rid of that pesky error message. i don't know what the problem is since i can still log into icloud itself from this mac. i don't really care about this mac having access to icloud except for the find my iphone feature. the only reason i use icloud at all is to back up my iphone.

any options to get rid of the error message?

Try typing the password and the passcode in the same box. For example, password5678
