no place to enter 2 step verification code after changing password

imac early 2009 osx 10.8.5

i updated my password (not apple id) about a week ago. ever since i've been getting the error message "this mac can't connect to icloud because of a problem with xxxx@xxxx.com" (my apple id which is my email address) "open icloud to fix this problem" with the "later" and the "icloud preferences" buttons as options. i click on the preferences option.

i then get the screen that says an apple id verification code is required. when that is texted to me there is no place to enter it on my mac! only my apple id and password. however if i try to log in straight from icloud.com, no problem. all i want to do is get rid of that pesky error message. i don't know what the problem is since i can still log into icloud itself from this mac. i don't really care about this mac having access to icloud except for the find my iphone feature. the only reason i use icloud at all is to back up my iphone.

any options to get rid of the error message?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Try typing the password and the passcode in the same box. For example, password5678

OK, here's how I fixed it, and I can't believe I didn't think of this sooner!

  1. Go to appleid.apple.com, sign in using password and supplied authentication code
  2. Click the Edit button next to your account details and turn 2-factor authentication off. You'll have to supply new security questions and a rescue e-mail.
  3. Click the blue Done button to save changes. You'll get notification(s) that 2-factor authentication has been turned off. Wait a couple of minutes for the change to propagate to various servers.
  4. Apple menu -> System Preferences -> iCloud and put in the AppleID password.

This worked for me. After over a week of being locked out of iCloud, App Store, and iTunes, I'm back in business! Now that I'm back in iCloud, I may try to re-enable 2-factor authentication. Or not.

such a useful thread. It is a nightmare using old Apple products in the modern age. I have various devices from 2008 to 2016. My Macbook from 2008 is practically unusable now that one cannot upgrade Browsers etc etc. logging into App Store as described here was a real nightmare because it leads you re setting your AppleID unnecessarily. Thanks a million!!

This worked for me too. I am disappointed with Apple's ham-fisted, anti-intuitive, and cryptic process to verify an Apple product with my Apple's iTunes' account. I am even more frustrated that there is an insane person out there who actually tried this illogical solution on their own for the first time. However, thank you for the solution. I guess now I know.

Thanks so much! This really helped! Also what's so baffling is that I have to enter my password FIRST, before the code is sent to my phone, which is a real catch 22 because I need the code to properly enter with my password, but I have to enter my password in order to get the code.

Beyond silly.

And I won't even get into how ridiculous it is that there is no instructions on where/when to type the code, since others on this thread have covered that so well.

Anyway, thank you for being a light in the darkness of this Kafka-esque MAC OS. 🙂
