In macOS Sierra the Mail function "Remove Attachments" (Message menu) no longer works!
Until now, when I received emails containing many large photos I always saved the photos seperately,
then removed them from the emails.
Now when I receive such an email, the photos are no longer displayed as attachments,
and can no longer be removed.
How can this be fixed?

Hi, i've just tried it again (hoping there would have been a "secret" update), but nothing has changed.
What I did:
1. Created new POP email to myself.
2. Added a jpeg file.
3. Sent it.
4. Received it. Image arrived inline, not as attachment. Can't be removed.

I receive my messages that have attachments as attachments (ie with the paperclip) not inline so that is not the problem because the delete attachments option is still always greyed out. I can only remove attachments that I have added from the sent folder. I cannot remove any that are sent to any of our accounts except the iCloud imap account. The problem looks like it is with our POP accounts. I tested sending the same attachment to our imap account and could delete it, I then send it to one of our POP accounts and the option to delete was not available. I bet Apple has just decided POP accounts are outdated so they no longer work properly! It would be nice if someone would confirm this!
I can remove attachments from messages received in my icloud account, but in my POP accounts.
Mind you, the attachments are removed from iCloud as well (which is to be expected, since that's how IMAP is supposed to work), so be careful what you remove is either unimportant or was really copied off somewhere else.
Thanks, now I'm one step further: at least it is now possible to remove own POP mail attachments in the Sent folder.
Unfortunately when receiving POP emails they are in the Inbox...
Thanks. We do not really want our attachments or our messages to be removed at the same time from all our devices, with 3 different users on our connected IMacs it would create problems which is why we don't want to switch to IMAP for all our accounts - assuming our server could actually provide them.

That's exactly why we prefer POP, too. You keep everything in Mail, and can delete the "originals" from the servers from time to time.

This problem started with Sierra and I would really love to see which emails have attachments and I need to remove them after I have copied the ones I want to keep.
Attachments that were sent to me whiles using previous OS versions are still there and can still be Removed by the menu Message -> Remove Attachments.
Apple need to fix this!

I have reported the issue and hope we get an answer that isn't 'update to IMAP accounts'!
At least there was that workaround (removing attachments from sent files in the sent folder), but now it stopped working when I wanted to remove a 7.5MB zip file: The zip file is no longer displayed as attachment, the menu greyed out.
Now, as a last resort, I forward such emails to myself without attachments and delete the originals. :-(
I have heard nothing from Apple Support and the problem persists. My mailboxes are being stuffed with unwanted attachments using up a lot of useful space - really frustrating. Has nobody got an answer to this???

I was SO hoping this would finally resolve the problem regarding deleting attachments - but it didn't! :-((
Why don't they listen...?
Click on apple logo > about this Mac > Storage > Manage >select Mail from left hand side of window .
Click on don't Automatically download any attachments .
A pop - up window appears do you want to optimise mail storage attachments will not be automatically downloaded , you can download the attachments at any time by opening them & can change the settings in mail preferences . So you can click on " OPTIMIZE "
I previously had issues with Mail app specially related to attachments, but since 10.12.2 upgrade, atleast my issues of pdf attachments is solved. Try your luck too.

I don't get this button. I just see this instead:
Maybe the button only appears for IMAP accounts and not for POP?
Tried it on two other Macs and the button never appeared.
But even if I would have that button, I wouldn't want to turn automatic download of attachments off, because in 99% I need the attachments immediately. So this would only delay the work.
If the function Remove attachments would work as previously, all would be fine:
download attachments - save them elsewhere - remove them from emails.
