In macOS Sierra the Mail function "Remove Attachments" (Message menu) no longer works!
Until now, when I received emails containing many large photos I always saved the photos seperately,
then removed them from the emails.
Now when I receive such an email, the photos are no longer displayed as attachments,
and can no longer be removed.
How can this be fixed?

I am not at my mac to check but I believe the problem is not that the command to remove attahments doedn't wirk, but rather thst you are receiving a message with inline images not attachments.
You can easily test my theory: send an email to yourself with a picture attached. Then see if:
1) the messages appears with the attachment icon
2) you can remove rhe attachment

Thanks for your answer. Yes, I can confirm this is the problem!
No matter if I send an email to myself or if I receive emails from someone else,
the pictures appear no longer as attachments, but "inline". Why?
I'm sure other people didn't change anything when sending me emails
- before Sierra they arrived as attachments, now as inline, so Mail
must "convert" everything to inline, hence attachments can't be deleted any more.
What can we do?
Now that I got to test in my mac (Sierra), and my wife's mac (Yosemite), I also see that the "Remove Attachments" command is always greyed out, I tried with several messages containing attachments. In Yosemite it seems to work (I did not actually remove, but the menu entry is active, not greyed out). I don't have a mac with El Capitan to compare.

As i have googled , attachments are stored on server while using POP account , even you delete attachments from the system .
And in IMAP accounts , if attachment is deleted from the computer it is also deleted from the server , thats why users are preferring IMAP account .

Thanks tygb, I know the difference between IMAP and POP accounts, and I still prefer the advantages of POP accounts.
This doesn't solve the problem Sierra brought with receiving attachments as inline, which makes it impossible to remove attachments from emails.
Has anyone else found a solution?

Yes its your choice to choose POP or IMAP , I have googled around as how to remove attachments from POP accounts ( ox daily ) and you tube videos .
Please google it yourself the answer was there .
Thanks for looking around, but I want to continue removing attachments within Mail.
(I'm sure there are ways to find the attachments deep in Mail's database and delete the files there, but then I would not get these little inserted notes in the concerned emails about which attachments (e.g. file names identifying photos) have been removed.)
I think so we are not permitted to attach third party google links here , as I have seen the answer is in a site ox daily .
So , you are talking about user library ( ~/Library ) > containers > com.apple.mail > Data > Library > Mail > V4 > all alfa numeric folders .

For POP accounts, reduce the amount of time that copies of messages and attachments remain on the mail server before being removed. Choose Mail > Preferences, click Accounts, select the account, click Advanced, then choose a different option from the pop-up menu below “Remove copy from server after retrieving a message.”

Thanks for trying to help, but I'm afraid this doesn't help with my problem.
You can compress the large attachment and try to delete .

(I want to keep the email (without attachment) in Mail,
and save the attachment (mostly photos I receive) elsewhere.)
