Internet speed not acceptable

Hi,

Shaw Cable is my internet provider.

They recently introduced an Internet 150 plan. I am supposed to get download speed of 150Mbps.

But when I run a Shaw Speed test, the result is only 8Mbps.

I have a 27 inch 5K iMac, 4GHz Core i7, with 32G ram and 3T hard drive running OSX 10.11.6 . My time capsule is 3T running 7.7.7

The Shaw speed test gave me a warning: my speed is too slow!!

I tried reboot, cmd/opt PR reboot.

I checked that none of my Apple TV, iPhones, iPads are running. I even turned off Dropbox and Time machine to avoid any background WiFi use.

I have tried to run with WiFi only; run with WiFi on and ethernet cable plugged into the iMac from the Shaw Modem box; and also run with the ethernet cable only having my time capsule turned off to have no wifi.

The best result was last night, at 25Mbps download and 16 upload.

Today, I was down to 8 download and 16 upload.

I wrote to Shaw Cable, they wrote back saying they check their end and everything is OK, meaning I am supposed to have 150 Mbps download.

What did I do wrong?

Please help.

Eddie

What is the make & model of the Internet modem that your ISP Shaw is providing you? Which exact model of the Time Capsule do you have?

When you had your iMac directly connected to the Shaw modem, via Ethernet, what speed were you getting then?

Finally, other than the Shaw-provided Internet speed test, did you do any other testing to verify data throughput speeds? If so, what other tools did you use?

Thank you for the updated information.

Your Hitron CGNM-2250 is not a simple modem, but a combination modem and wireless router, also known as a wireless gateway device. Your Time Capsule (TC) is also a wireless router. Similar to the gateway except it does not include a built-in modem.

Each device's routing functions are enabled by default. One of those functions is called NAT. When two or more routers are connected in series with NAT enabled, you have what is known as a "double NAT" condition. This type of condition is inefficient and can lead to poor data transfer rates through both devices.

I believe this is what is causing your download speeds to suffer. To remedy this, we just need to reconfigure the TC as a bridge. You would do so using the AirPort Utility, as follows:

  • Run the AirPort Utility.
  • Select the TC, and then, select Edit.
  • Click on the Network tab.
  • Change Router Mode to: Off (Bridge Mode)
  • Click on Update and allow the TC to restart.
  • You can then quit the AirPort Utility.

Thank you for your patience and thank you for holding my hands.

I did what you said.

I am back to 30 download and stays at 16 upload, just like with my old Plan 50.

The Shaw speed test continues to pop up the warning: Oops, something is wrong. Your test results are lower than expected. Please consult our help section for troubleshooting.

So, how do I make it do 150?

btw: my 2 iPhones and iPad are still running on the "my network" as it was the last 10 years under the Time Capsule. It's not running the "Shaw-xxxxxx-5G" although the Shaw-5G shows as a choice on the phone. I changed one iPhone to test the Shaw WiFi by entering the password give to me by Shaw. It seems to work but I don't know how to check wifi speed on the iPhone.

So, how do I know if my iMac is running on "My Network" or is it on the 5G? Should I switch the iMac? How do I switch the iMac to run under 5G? Does it make any difference?

Again, I am sorry to trouble you. I really appreciate your help. Thank you Sir. Thank you very much.

Glad to see your are getting some improvement.

Ah, that is because each device is still broadcasting their own wireless network. You have a number of choices here, but to try to resolve the speed issue, I will recommend that you disable the wireless radios on the TC. That way only the Hitron will be providing your wireless network.

To do so:

  • Run the AirPort Utility.
  • Select the TC, and then, select Edit.
  • Select the Wireless tab.
  • Change Network Mode to: Off
  • Click on Update and allow the TC to restart.
