Cannot back-up to time capsule using Sierra OS

Ever since I upgraded to Sierra OS - I cannot get time machine to back-up to the time capsule. The Apple support team tells me that Time Capsule is not reliable and I should attach an external drive to back-up. Why the heck did I waste money on Time Capsule?

My experience tells me that there is nothing wrong with time capsule. I am trying to back up using USB disk plugged into iMac. I have ticked all the boxes-reformatted, verified, restarted, etc- and cannot back up under Sierra. Back up starts OK, prepares and calculates time to ** OK. Time machine then hangs at about 60 GB. This has happened repeatedly. So I believe problem is with Sierra and not your hardware.

Just to add to Bob's reply.. if you don't have issues with AV, security software or junk apps.. then this can still happen.

It can be worthwhile to do a verify of your main drive.. although that also has not worked for people.

In the end it is time to opt out of Time Machine and go for a 3rd party backup software.

I use CCC but superduper and chronosync also have following.

Here is one.. failed at 120GB repeatedly. Worked absolutely without issues on CCC.

The issue is simple - Sierra has a bug in it that Apple needs to fix. You can try to complete a back-up in "safe mode" which appears to work. Then when you reboot in normal mode Sierra tells you that you need to initiate a fresh / new back-up. That message appears multiple times over weeks of time.

Someone please tell Apple to FIX the BUG in Sierra!

I too have this problem-no back up on my time capsule.

I have used it for two years.

i started getting the message "no back up for x days.

starting on October 28th-the dayI installed Sierra!.

I have tried several things suggested by members of my Mac Users group.

Nothing.

It starts but does not complete the back up.

As of today I am getting a message no back up for 821 days!!!

has anyone had any success calling Apple?

Like others, I have done all the right things: reinstalled Sierra, restarted iMac endlessly, removed possibly interfering apps, excluded possibly difficult files and folders, lit a few candles and prayed. Always TM starts, prepares and calculates OK. Then it backs up to validated/repaired/erased/formatted USB drive between 20 and 60 GB and stalls, with little ball spinning endlessly. Interestingly, depending on which files/folders have been excluded from backup, the size of the backup changes, suggesting that there is some file that TM does not like. But of course, I have no way of identifying that file. TM knows but won't tell me. I have given up and am now using 'Mac Backup Guru' which seems to work OK, providing a daily automatic **. I have prepared to downgrade to El Capitan, but it wasn't all that hot either. Also, since installing Sierra, I have changed my email (another nightmare) and accumulated files, settings and apps not backed up under El Capitan. I can't face it.

Hi folks. I have had the same problem as everyone else. However, my research indicates the problem is not with the Airport Time Capsule, but it is with Time Machine. I have discontinued using Time Machine to manage my backups and purchased Carbon Copy Cloner. Carbon Copy Cloner does not have all the functionality of Time Machine, but it backs things up to my Airport Time Capsule. Apple needs to update Time Machine so it is compatible with Sierra.
