AOL Mail will not work on iPad Pro with iOS 10

My iPad Pro with iOS 10 does not seem to support AOL mail (imap). All other mail accounts work (gmail, iCloud mail) but not AOL. It worked beautifully on my older iPad. We have tried deleting and adding the AOL account many times. I've called Apple Care with no positive results.

Set it up as Other mail account. You need the following info:

Incoming Mail Server

  • Account Type: IMAP
  • Username: ___@aol.com
  • Server hostname: imap.aol.com
  • Server port: 993
  • Authentication: Password
  • SSL/TLS:Yes

Outgoing Mail Server

  • Username: ___@aol.com
  • Server hostname: smtp.aol.com
  • Server port: 587
  • Authentication: Password
  • SSL/TLS:Yes

replace ___@aol.com with your email address.

Thank you, ShagCA, for your well organized response. I have checked all the settings you mentioned above.

Incoming Mail Server: All are as you suggested except I can't find the SSL/TLS. In the Advanced section in "incoming settings" I see "IMAP Path Prefix / " and server port 993, but don't see "SSL/TLS: YES". (But these settings look exactly like on another iPad with iOS 10 which I own and AOL mail is working fine.)

Outgoing Mail Server: Everything is set as you suggested except:

The server port isn't 587...it's 465 (same as the other iPad in which AOL mail is working).

Instead of seeing SSL/TSL, I see "Use SSL" and the green toggle is turned on (but that section is grayed out and I can't make changes.

Hope you can make some sense of this. I am still perplexed. Thank you.

Hello Demo,

I still have having problems but my settings are not exactly as ShagCA said they should be. However, with another iPad and iPhones (2) working with Apple Mail using imap AOL I am having success.

The specific problem with AOL imap mail using the mail app on the brand new iPad Pro. It seems to get hung up while sending. Takes forever...and sometimes the mail is not sent. Very unreliable. No problems at all with gmail and iCloud mail.

Any insight would be helpful. I've exhausted my Mac computer club's resources, Apple Care, and web searches.

Thank you!

On one of my AOL accounts I am using Port 587 and on the other I am using Port 465 on the outgoing sever settings. I am using 993 incoming on both. Have you tried using another outgoing server setting? I think I had to do that in order to get my personal account to work properly because the primary server setting is set to Off.

Don't worry about SSL/TLS (encryption) setting. If it's already set to port 993, IMAP connection is secure (encrypted). Do you not receive incoming mail at all?

You mentioned another iPad device that has no problem sending/receiving email. Are you using that iPad over the same WiFi connection as the other iPad that you're having problem with?

Use SSL is already on so leave it alone. Did you try setting the port to 587? Did you add username and password in the Outgoing SMTP settings?

Take a look at the following article from AOL website (pay attention to this section "IMAP Configuration Instructions:"):

When your outgoing mail failed to send, did you receive a bounce mail notification from AOL? Did you attach large photos/videos to the outgoing mail?

Oct 15, 2016 8:15 AM in response to Demo

Thanks, but not sure how I would change the outgoing server port for smtp.aol.com: the server is toggled ON and the rest of the screen which indicates 465 is grayed out. It is still grayed out when I toggle the button to OFF.

I know the gmail mail (sending and receiving) is working well. I was able to send and receive email on the iPad this morning (using the same WI FI as the other iPad which successfully and quickly send AOL mail with the iPad Mail).

Oct 15, 2016 8:41 AM in response to ShagCA

No, I didn't receive a bounce back email from AOL...eventually (sometimes up to 10 minutes) the mail sent. I was not sending anything large in or attached to the mail...just a few words. When sending the upper right of my left of the iPad where is shows my Cellular carrier, WIFI...there was ad spinning symbol. I indicated in another thread that both iPads are using the same WIFI to send AOL mail using the Mail App on the iPad. The new iPad Pro just doesn't seem to work well.

Oct 15, 2016 9:05 AM in response to ShagCA

Again, thanks...I read the AOL article.

I can see how I could change the Incoming Server Port from 993 (for Standard) to 143 (for SSL connections), but since I don't know what I have and the 993 port works on my other iPad I don't think I should change it.

The outgoing is set at 465 and the option to change it is grayed out.

Another article from AOL support said that in checking the SMTP settings, one option would be if you had multiple email accounts, try using an STMP server from another account. So I turned ON the smtp.gmail.com in addition to the primary server (stmp.aol.com). It did not seem to make a difference. Sorry it isn't doing the trick, but I appreciate the suggestions.

I Think that I gave you bad information, but you figured it out anyway. I was able to choose another smtp server other than the primary server and then my personal account started working as it should. I did this several years ago, so I'm not quite sure how I did it now.

This is a screenshot. The primary server is off. I used the first AOL server under Other SMTP Servers.

This is a screenshot of the settings with my personal information removed. I am using Port 587 here.

Hi Demo...we are close to the same page!

On the first screen shot you said you didn't recall how you added the smtp.aol.com to the list of OTHER STMP SERVERS. I guess that is what I should try to find out.

What I don't get is on the second screen shot...when I bring up that screen on the iPad, the bottom part is grayed out.

It also looks like I have using server port 465.

I am pretty sure now where the problem is...now just have to figure out how to resolve it.

I may give up trying to resolve this and try Apple Care again, although I didn't find them very helpful.

They just had me delete and install the AOL mail again. No change.

Thanks!

Oct 15, 2016 11:10 AM in response to Demo

Demo, I may have found how to add another smtp server...I just put in smtp.aol.com (with no name or PW) and it populated in "Other SMTP Servers" list. Now will give it a try...with turning off the Primary Server (like your first screen shot). When trying to send AOL mail now...it looks like it tries the first server (gmail) first...I see you have yours in a different order. Maybe that is the problem as I have tried to send 2 aol emails with that configuration and they are listed in the bottom of the AOL mail as "2 unsent messages". Again, I may try Apple Care as I must be doing something wrong. Thanks so much for your help.

Hello Demo & ShagCA,

You have both been very helpful...considering I am pretty much an novice.

Bottom line, you were both close and your advice was good.

What I eventually did (based on all your help) was to call Apple Care again and ask for a senior agent.

I told him that my AOL mail outgoing was port 465 and I wanted 587 and that when I looked at my AOL outgoing the server number was grayed out so I couldn't change it.

What the senior Apple Care advisor did was delete my AOL mail account and add it again...only I was instructed not to select AOL when presented with the menu of emails but rather chose "other" at the bottom and manually input my data. When setting up this AOL account it defaulted to outgoing port 465 (in black print)and I was able to change it to 587. We completed the process...and from then on everything went very well. AOL mail was able to sent in a speedy fashion.

Many thanks!
