I have a Yamaha PSR-E303 portable keyboard and recently got a cable that plugs directly from the keyboard to my laptop

You have to tell us a little bit more than that you got "a cable". What type of cable?

Are you trying to send MIDI data (acting as a MIDI Device) or Audio data (acting as an Audio Device)? These are completely different setup that require different configurations.

Hope that helps

Meaning... you can see notes appear in Logic's transport (the bar with the record/play buttons).

What you've connected sounds like a USB MIDI connection... MIDI is not sound, it's only a trigger. Try loading one of Logic's virtual instrument tracks and see if your keyboard triggers the instrument.

Make sure Logic's preferences/audio has either your audio interface or built-in audio selected.

I'm presuming that the cable you bought was a midi cable?

Midi does not carry any audio at all. To hear (or record) the yamaha sounds in Logic you would have to also connect the audio outs on the Yamaha to the audio ins on your computer or audio interface.

EDIT= The other chaps posts were not showing when I wrote mine. I think those fine posters have covered everything. Apologies.
