No message alert (sound/vibration) when locked

My iPhone 6 Plus Running iOS 10.0.2 does not give an audible (or vibration) alert for new messages when locked. This is a standard Apple iPhone 6 Plus. I'm not running any jail broken software.

The Problem:

When I receive a text / iMessage AND the screen is locked I do not get an audible or silent (vibration) alert. This just stated happening as I was receiving alerts yesterday. I DO get sounds and vibration notifications if the phone is unlocked when the message arrives. The visual notification DOES appear on the lock screen when I wake the phone up. It also appears if the lock screen is awake but not unlocked (but without sound or vibration.) I have also tried rebooting and turning off various other settings... I DO get alerts on my Mac & Apple Watch...

Settings > Sounds :

Vibrate on ring and Vibrate on Silent are both on (green)

Ringer is set to max and "Change with buttons" is off (gray)

The text tone is set to Classic Noir and vibration is set to heart beat.

I have tried different audible and vibration alerts,. It does not fix the problem

Settings > Notifications > Messages :

Allow Notifications is on (Green)

Show in notification center is on (Green)

Badge App Icon is on (Green)

Show in lock screen is on (Green)

Sounds is set to Noir / Vibration Heart beat

DND :

Do not disturb is off (gray)

Hard Witch / Silent Mode :

I typically keep the switch in the off (silent / Orange) position. However in my testing I tired it enabled and disabled. It does not make a difference i do not get any sort of alert if the screen is locked.

Again I have tried a various combination of enabling these and disabling these with no change.

The notifications work like the link provided. Notifications on your Apple Watch - Apple Support When you have the watch on, and the watch is configured with Wrist Detection, and the phone is locked, notifications will only appear on the Watch. If the phone is unlocked, they will appear on the iPhone, and not the Watch. If you wish for notifications to appear on both devices, you would need to turn off Wrist Detection in the Watch app on the iPhone. That does, however, come with its own set of issues. With that turned off, Apple Pay will no longer work, as well as some other features. They are all explained in that link I provided before. Turning off Wrist Detection is the only way for notifications to appear on both devices, so that must have been the way you had it configured in the past. If you wish to see a change as you mentioned, then provide feedback to Apple here, https://www.apple.com/feedback/watch.html

Thanks for the reply. That might be the understanding but it’s not a solution. It’s such a stupid set up and really negates the use of the I watch. I now have to turn off wrist detection - amazing!!! So it’s not really a watch. Seriously this was not the case until this week when I upgraded to an X. Why would you have a set up so that they’re all not linked??? Crazy

I’ve sent a note to Apple. Let’s see what happens

I'm sorry, but this has always been the case. Notifications when the phone is locked, only arrive on the watch. I'm not sure how that negates the use of the watch, but you are entitled to your opinion. I like the fact that I can keep my phone in my pocket and receive all of my notifications on the watch.

If the "you" that you are referring to is Apple, I'm sorry, but this is a user to user support forum, and Apple does not participate here. You are correct in sending your feedback to Apple. That is how they get their information.

I have done the same things you have done and I no longer get a text alert sound. Been on chat with Apple and they have no clue why this is happening. The minute I update to 11.1 is when all my issues started...big mistake..it was working perfect until 11 came out. I seriously do not think Apple knows how to fix any issues since 11 11.1 11.2 or 11.3 have come out...it keeps making my iPhone 6s worse.....

No where did I say anything about turning the ability to see the time off on the watch. I'm not exactly sure what you are referring to there. Nothing in my posts have anything to do with the ability to raise your wrist and see the time on the watch. Seems you are referring to something completely different now. The ability to see the time, and notifications are two separate things.

Sorry I have edited my post accordingly. Yes, I have already verified DND is OFF. It is typically set to automatically enable DND mode at 11:00 PM and disable it around 8:00 AM... Unless I am already awake and I disable it manually.

Also as a side note, in silent mode (Orange) I do not get any vibration alerts. In normal operation (with audio) I do not get either alert assuming the screen is still locked. The only notification I get is a banner that appears when I activate the screen.

User troubleshooting includes restart, reset, restore from backup, restore to factory. Test after each step. If you get as far as restore to factory, test the device without adding any additional content to it. If it will not work in that condition, then you need to make an appointment at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple Store to have the hardware examined by Apple.
