I am trying to add songs from iTunes (like I have done previously) to my iMovie but it says I have 1118 files protected and unavailable. I really want specific songs for my movie but I cannot seem to add them, let alone find them in iMovie. Please help! I am on a time crunch, need to have this video done by Thursday.

The songs that are shown as protected and unavailable are those songs purchased from iTunes before 2009, and that have Digital Rights Management protection (DRM). Unfortunately, those songs are not available for use in iMovie. I believe that the DRM protection can be removed through the iTunes Match program that you would need to subscribe to. Since you are in a time crunch, it might be more feasible to repurchase the few songs you may need for your specific video, provided that the iTunes store still sells it. Most newly purchased songs from iTunes are DRM free.

If you were able to use protected songs in iMovie or GarageBand, you could create versions without the digital right attached. That is why iMovie is not allowing to use these songs.
Play the song on your iPhone or iPad and record the sound on your Mac to create an audio file you can use in iMovie.
