Sending photos/images to non Apple phones.

Hi there,

This has been bugging me for ages now. I am not sure whether it is just me or a setting on my phone. I have had numerous iPhones over the last few years and it always the same.

During the day and night when at work or at home, my phone is connected to WIFI and I switch off the MOBILE DATA to save data.

I have found that I cannot send picture messages or images to Android phones (non Apple phones ie Normal Text Message not iMessage) if I have WIFI only. I have to TURN OFF wifi and switch on my MOBILE DATA and then the picture/image will go through. But with iPhones, iMessages go through on WIFI only.

Why is this? I find it so frustrating as I have many contacts not using an iPhone and not using Whatsapp or other chat apps that is easier to send videos and images to.

Can anyone help? Many thanks.

Your question is really a two-parter:

  • What types of messages can Wi-Fi support? iMessage? (Yes.) SMS/MMS? (No.)
  • What is the relationship of cellular data to SMS/MMS? (Cellular data is normally not required for SMS/MMS, as these are sent using cellular voice methods).

Regarding your first question part, see this article for more detail:

Regarding your second question part, perhaps you're using cellular data because the person(s) you're sending to used to have iMessage (Apple products) that were never de-registered properly. This may help the intended recipient(s);

Aha!!! Perhaps that is the problem.

Those things only work with iMessage!

What I thought you were asking about was an action like sending a photo using a text message to an Android user.

By the way, since you're trying to send "the hand-written 'Hello' 'Thank you' images ...", that explains your use of cellular data when Wi-Fi is off. The thinking goes like this:

  • You are sending "Hello" "Thank You" images. These images are only valid in iMessage. Therefore, you are sending an iMessage.
  • iMessage normally is sent via Wi-Fi. But if Wi-Fi is not available and your cellular carrier supports iMessage, the message will be sent using cellular data.

As I said, however, MMS would not use cellular data (or Wi-Fi).

Just going into settings and turning mobile data off. Not touching Airplane Mode at all.

My wifi connects automatically at work and home but I turn off mobile data. BUT EVEN if I don't turn off MOBILE DATA and WIFI is on, the pictures still won't send. It has to be on MOBILE / Cellular Data only.

Okay, the first answer answers everything. So when I am in wifi zone which is pretty much all the time, I cannot send text SMS/MMS? That is frustrating! I have to manually turn off wifi everytime then. Even when my MOBILE DATA is turned on, Wifi overrides everything.

The second part of the question, no these are people I know who do not have iPhones - they are Samsung users.....

No, sorry, I did not mean to suggest that conclusion at all.

I'm simply trying to say that SMS/MMS relies solely on having a cellular connection - the same type and quality of connection you would use to have a voice conversation over that cellular connection.

I only meant to imply that Wi-Fi is irrelevant to SMS/MMS.

One clarification request:

Are you able to send a simple text messages (with no images - only text) to an Android phone while cellular data is off and Wi-Fi is on? In other words, is your issue restricted solely to sending MMS messages and not SMS (simple text) messages?

And do you have the same misbehavior when receiving messages?

Yes, you are correct... SMS text is fine... MMS is not.

No.. no issue receiving as far as I know... well if I don't receive something I wouldn't know about it I guess. But my issue is pretty much just sending MMS or now with the new update.. those little hand-written "Hello", "Thank You" images and GIFs that iPhone has now in iMessages.

NOOOOO... okay.... let's forget about THOSE NEW THINGS. My initial question was MMS ie PHOTOS. Let's just deal with that............. it is the photos that has been the issue with my last 3 iPhones... 4S, 5S and now 6S.....

Sorry.. should not have added that in.. to confuse things.......

Ok, I think you just answered my initial question. Forget the extra things that iMessage can do with other Apple iPhones - that is all cool.

1) iMessages go through regardless with WIFI on and Mobile Data OFF.

2) MMS does not go through with WIFI on and MOBILE DATA OFF.

3) My frustration is to manually TURN OFF wifi everytime I want to send an MMS even though MOBILE DATA is turn on cos the iPhone automatically uses WIFI for all the functions.

4) I have this problem getting my VOICE messages too - voice call messages will not come through with WIFI on, even with MOBILE DATA on. I have to physically leave WIFI area and then voice msgs will come through, just the same as with MMS.

Somehow this has not solved my issue... so does everyone not send MMS when WIFI is turned on....? Perhaps I should stick to Whatsapp......?? !! Hahaha. But not everyone uses that!

Thanks for your help... I don't think there is much else to do but accept this annoying issue......
