Google shell/banner in Safari

When I search Google from within Safari, and then click a search result link, about half the time I get to the result page but with a grey banner across the top of the page. The banner has an X, but when clicked it doesn't remove the banner, it takes me back to the Google search results.

What is this, why it is there, and most importantly, how do I get rid of it?

This is on an iPhone 7.

Hi there, Aaaaaack!

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! It sounds like you are having issues with Safari on your iPhone. The good news is there is an article you can take a look at to see some steps to get this taken care of. Check out this article with steps to check the Safari web settings on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch . Specifically:

Clear information from your device

To clear your history and cookies from Safari in iOS 8 or later, tap Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data. In iOS 7 or earlier, tap Clear History and tap Clear Cookies and Data.

To clear other stored information from Safari, tap Settings > Safari > Advanced > Website Data > Remove All Website Data.

Clearing your history, cookies, and browsing data from Safari won't change your AutoFill information.

To visit sites without leaving a history, learn how to turn private browsing on or off.

This will allow you to clear Safari and be able to remove the grey bar from your search.

Cheers!
