multi colored screen when shutting down iMac

All,

Since upgrading to macOS Sierra, my iMac shows a multi colored screen when I shut down, see image below.

The screen shows up immediately after shut down starts, remains for a few seconds, than turns black and shuts down. It is not really a big deal, but it is bugging me. So, has anyone seen something similar? My iMac is a Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015 model running macOS Sierra 10.12.

@Jackson-X,

Taken a bit longer than I expected, but I think I found out what the problem is. I do not see the problem with a test user, and while the test user was shutting down I realized that it uses a stock Apple desktop background. I was using a non default, non stock Apple, desktop background, but have changed to a stock Apple desktop background which seems to have solved the problem for me. Still early days, as I have only just figured this out, but you might give also give this a try.

Hi , i have just bought an iMac and I'm getting the same issue ! At first I thought it was something I had done , after googling it I found I'm not alone , it doesn't happen every time I shut down so it's difficult to monitor , somehow I managed to delete the operating system from my mac so had to take it in to have it reinstalled , the multi coloured screen was happening before I wiped everything and even after the reinstall I still get it , has anyone anymore ideas how to stop this happening ?

Yup! Not the only one 😉

I too have had this exact same problem on shutdown. I can't recall if it happened after the MacOS Sierra update or that it did it on OS X El Capitan too. It is indeed a very random error, which happens only once in a while. I have a 27-Inch 5K iMac from late 2015, so to me it seems quite obvious that is must be something specific to this model right?

I am quite worried, and I truly hope this is just a software-issue that will be fixed in the next update..

If someone manages to fix this problem, it would be awesome if they could share it with us.

I have the same issue and same iMac Late 2015 5K,1TB SSD with a M395X , noticed it yesterday, never had it with macOS Sierra 10.12.1 or El Capitan at all. Since the update to Sierra my iMac has shut down oddly like it stalls as with the background frozen for a second sometimes. Never did any of this with El Cap. Clean install of 10.12.2 didn't help.
