Apple watches exercise tracking difference

So me and my wife often exercise together, she has the 38mm series 2 watch and I have the 42mm sites 2 watch, the thing is the distances recorded when we do the same run/cycle can differ fairly dramatically.

I there any thing specific that would give rise to this ? We noticed similar things on series 1 and thought upgrading would solve this.

Apple Watch uses different sensors and data sources to track the results of workouts, depending on the activity type.


For example, Apple Watch Series 2 has built-in GPS, so can access location information during outdoor walking, running and cycling workouts.


After an outdoor workout, if significantly different distances are recorded by your watches, it may help to review and compare the route maps in the Activity app for that workout. Any inaccuracies may be due to issues with GPS signal coverage or to differences in your settings.


The following steps may help (followed by each of you):


On your iPhone, go to: Settings > Privacy > Location Services:

  • Check that Location Services (the main setting at the top) is turned on.
  • In the list of apps beneath, check that Apple Watch Workout is set to While Using.
  • If each setting is already enabled:
    • Try briefly turning off Location Services and then turning it back on again.
    • Try briefly changing the setting for Apple Watch Workout to Never and then back to While Using.


During general daily wear and when using the Workout app to record workouts when GPS data is either not relevant or not available (eg Indoor Run), the Activity app and Workout app track your arm motion (measured by the accelerometer) when estimating results including distance.


For the best results, allow the arm on which you are wearing your watch to swing naturally as you move around and during workouts (where relevant to the activity type).


Calibrating your watch can improve the accuracy of estimations made by Activity app and Workout app. More information and instructions for calibrating your watch are available via the link below. Be sure to calibrate for at least 20 minutes at each of the speeds at which you typically walk, run or jog (this does not have to be done, for any given speed, in one go - it can be spread across multiple workouts).


The article also includes instructions for resetting existing calibration data and starting afresh. Resetting your calibration data will not erase your Activity history.
