Phone icon doesn't appear when syncing

Trying to sync phone and computer. Latest version of iTunes downloaded. When I plug phone into USB the phone icon never appears. Tried different USB ports on laptop, and even different USB cable.

Suggestions? (color me frustrated)

Thanks for seeking help with your iPhone not being recognized by your computer. I understand how important it is to be able to sync data between your computer and iPhone. I would be happy to offer some thoughts on this.

The first thing we want to ensure is that all your data is safe. You can make a backup of your iPhone in iCloud using this article : How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch .

Once your data is safe, please plug in anything into your USB ports. Another iOS device, third party mp3 player, external drives, anything. Are you sure the USB ports are working? If your USB ports are working properly, please check these articles. Since I do not know your computer nor the current operating system and don't have an exact alert or cause to go from, I will provide multiple articles to get you started with this:

1. If iTunes doesn‘t recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod - This article offers troubleshooting for both a Mac and a PC. There is a section for Windows that shows different icons you may see. Please check those icons in your computer, and then the respective troubleshooting based on what you see to resolve this.
