10.12.1 - problems after update

Hello, I just updated from 10.12 to 10.12.1.

Never before was an OS update such a catastrophe!

(BTW I updated because I was hoping the Mail attachment bug was fixed.)

Many apps which are running in the menu bar, are no longer displayed!

To be able to access them I have to close them via Activity Monitor

and then start them again. This happens always after restarting.

System Preferences no longer loads -> listed as Force Quit Application.

Preview no longer loads -> listed as Force Quit Application.

I stopped trying out more... Who knows how to fix this?

Else I could only restore my Time Machine backup (with 10.12.0), which would take at least 8 hours.

(I have a USB drive with a 10.12.0 installer too, but it doesn't allow to "downgrade"!)

I watch the same symptoms. It affects Apple's own applications as well as third party applications: about 60 % do not launch successfully; their icons are jumping in the dock endlessly, no activity marker appears in the dock. But once you force quit them, they start successfully then. Hopefully I don't have to repeat this procedure after every restart of my Mac …

my first suggestion would be to go to Applications->Utilities->Disk Utility

and run Disk First Aid and see if that helps. Maybe some permissions or

such may have got messed up or some other directory error needs to be fixed.

Thanks. I booted from my 10.12.0 USB installer and ran Disk Utility from there.

Though it didn't report any problems it might have repaired something, because now after restarting my Mac System Preferences and Preview are working again!

But now Activity Monitor doesn't start!!

The menu bar problems still exist.

I also noticed my Kensington Trackball Works driver 1.3.0 no longer works.

A lot of problems because of such a small update...

Some minutes ago I wrote "Activity Monitor doesn't start". I tried your "trick" and it helped.

(I also hope I don't have to repeat this procedure again and again for many apps...)

Since these errors appeared after updating rather than upgrading I was pretty sure the problem involved caches. I think it would be worth downloading, running, and pasting the results of EtreCheck here. It might show something obvious. If it doesn't then downloading Sierra and reinstalling (without erasing anything) would be my next step.

All this worked perfectly before the update.

Do you mean via Internet recovery?

(Or how else?)

Thanks again.

Yes, and yesterday they all worked fine. 😕

dwb wrote:

You don't want to use Internet Recovery - just download via the Store App or recovery partition if that fails.

Just to be 100% sure: you mean via the App Store "INSTALL":

User uploaded file

... and this will leave my user files and everything intact, just refresh the 10.12.01 installation?

(on my USB installer drive I only have 10.12.0)
