10.12.1 - problems after update

Hello, I just updated from 10.12 to 10.12.1.

Never before was an OS update such a catastrophe!

(BTW I updated because I was hoping the Mail attachment bug was fixed.)

Many apps which are running in the menu bar, are no longer displayed!

To be able to access them I have to close them via Activity Monitor

and then start them again. This happens always after restarting.

System Preferences no longer loads -> listed as Force Quit Application.

Preview no longer loads -> listed as Force Quit Application.

I stopped trying out more... Who knows how to fix this?

Else I could only restore my Time Machine backup (with 10.12.0), which would take at least 8 hours.

(I have a USB drive with a 10.12.0 installer too, but it doesn't allow to "downgrade"!)

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015), macOS Sierra (10.12)

The only way to reinstall 10.12.1 on your Mac is to:

  • Erase your Macintosh HD - either from the Recovery HD or a USB thumb drive 10.12 installer.
  • Install 10.12 - either from the Recovery HD or a USB thumb drive 10.12 installer.
  • Restore your user accounts, data and apps.
  • Open the App Store app to install the 10.12.1 update.

Currently, there is no 10.12.1 full installer nor a 10.12.1 Delta updater.

You get to your Recovery HD by restarting while holding down Command+R.

Thank you. Another way would be to restore my Time Machine backup of yesterday (when I still had 10.12.0). Seems less problematic to me. (Erase Macintosh HD can lead to problems with Fusion drives, as I once had to learn; restoring apps (did you mean via Migration Assistant?) could lead to missing apps (as I had to learn e.g. my old Pages '09 had once not been re-installed; settings stored in initialization files etc. could get lost - a nightmare to check/compare and re-set.)

And I don't see how this could help (the way you suggested or restore of TM backup), bacause in both cases I would end up with updating to 10.12.1, just as I did this morning, which lead to the problems.

Any other ideas...? Thanks again.

I have exactly the same problem. When starting my Macbook some icons just bounce. After force killing them I can start them again. This might take sometimes many tries. Sometimes some background programs are also not working correctly, for example Outlook thinks it's not activated. I have to restart again. All this started after upgrading to 10.12.1.

How can I re-install this update? It is not yet available as a separate download from Apple - Support - Downloads

That is currently a conundrum.

It is surprising it is not available yet, neither is an updated full installer.

My experience has seen these occur within only a few hours of the MacApp Store

update being available. Not sure what the wait is in doing it this time around.

If you're trying to get things to work prior to the 10.12.1 update, then you have a couple of options, in my opinion.

You can restore from your Time Machine back up if this gets you to a point where you had no issues and don't allow the 10.12.1 update. Or do the steps I outlined and only migrate your user accounts and data. Then run App Store / Updates to update your OS (including 10.12.1), check things out and either migrate your apps over or manually reinstall and reconfigure them.

Same thing is happening here and I just don't have the time to revert from TimeMachine or re-install everything... I'm getting nuts with this... Almost ALL the apps can't be opened at the first attempt (they keep bouncing at the dock)...

An idea:

Maybe my Kensington Trackball driver isn't to blame that it stopped working.

Maybe it's the same problem - only that I can't force quit it and retry,

because it's no user-accessible app, but a driver started by the system, and thus just once?

You should be able to find the process in Activity Monitor and (force) quit it there.

What a great tip!!

I quitted the process "TrackballWorksHelper" (for my Kensington Trackball).

Then went to System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items

and there right-clicked TrackBallWorksHelper to show the app in Finder and restarted it.

(A normal Spotlight search didn't find it!!)

Thanks, at least my Trackball works again!
