Unable to access some websites except through an anonymizer proxy

I have a 2008 iMac, OSX 10.9.5, 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Everything has been running fine till recently.

In the past few weeks I have had trouble accessing or browsing some websites.

However, if I go through an anonymizer proxy web site, I can browse all previously unaccessible websites.

Anyone know what is going on?

TIA

Hello,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding you're unable to access come sites using Safari. I know being able to successfully browse the internet can be a very important part of daily use. I'm happy to help.

Please try the suggestions below:
  • Check the message that appears when a page fails to open. It may suggest ways to solve the problem or include information you need to solve it.

  • Make sure you’re using the correct address for the webpage. If you copied and pasted the address, make sure it doesn’t have extra characters or missing characters at the beginning or end.

  • If the website requires a VPN connection, make sure it’s functioning properly. For more information, see Connect to a virtual private network.

  • Try entering /index.html or /index.htm at the end of the address.

  • Choose View > Reload Page. If the page still won’t open, quit Safari, reopen it, then try again.

  • The website server may be busy, or the website may be unavailable temporarily. Try again later.

If the issue persists, try the remaining suggestions in the link above.

Have a fantastic day!

Examples of sites I am no longer able to load/browse are:

www.zerohedge.com

www.stockcharts.com

The problem is not Safari because using other browsers does not solve the problem.

In the past 24h I seem to have isolated the problem to the router rather than my machine.

If I use a different router, my browsing goes back to normal.

Any suggestions as to how I can get the router to go back to normal?

The reason for asking which version of Safari you are using is so that I can use that version in an attempt to duplicate what you are doing, in an effort to solve your problem.

No matter though, if you isolated the problem to your router, then these are the possibilities: either the router's firmware is obsolete, or it has been altered from its factory configuration, or the router's settings have been modified to redirect name server queries to a host that is not providing correct results.

Fix them respectively by determining if newer firmware is available for your model router, or by restoring its factory default configuration (including firmware) or correcting its DNS settings. If the router is not capable of running newer firmware, or is obsolete and no longer supported by its manufacturer, then your only recourse is to replace it with a newer one.

At least one zerohedge IPv4 address is 54.87.181.187

For stockcharts, 66.150.15.92

Be sure to secure your wireless network with WPA2 encryption and a reasonably strong password known only to authorized users of it. The device itself should have its own password which can (and probably should) be different. The router as well as all your other network equipment must also be kept physically secure from unauthorized access. Also, it's best to not allow setup over WAN, otherwise known as remote setup or configuration over the Internet. The only reason for these comments is out of an abundance of caution, in the event unauthorized tampering may have occurred. From what you describe there is little reason for that concern, but those are fundamental security practices everyone should observe.

So the router works fine will other computers.

So apparently the problem is between my iMac and the router with regards to these 2 specific websites.

I scanned the Apple help forums and have found people with similar issues. I am however either unable to implement the various solutions suggested or the solutions suggested do not work for my iMac

I tried to uninstall the router's settings by going through the "Open Network Preferences" option. I thought I removed the router in question and then tried to re-connect afresh to the same router. This procedure did not solve the issue however.

Is there a particular procedure I should follow in order to completely uninstall a router settings from my machine?

TIA

Shut down your Mac and restart it in "Safe Mode". To learn how to do that please read: Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up. Determine if the same problems exist while operating in that mode, or not.

Then: Use the following procedure to determine if the problem is isolated to your Mac, or lies elsewhere.

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Load macOS Recovery by holding and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac with a third finger.
  3. At the macOS Utilities screen, release those two fingers.
  4. Choose Get Help Online.
  5. Safari will launch, but it will lack your bookmarks, favorites, history and other preferences.

Determine if you can open those two specific websites.

Restart your Mac normally and describe your results.

If the problem does not occur in either Safe Mode or in Recovery mode, but returns after restarting your Mac normally, please read If Safari is slow, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or has other issues - Apple Support. The applicable section is "Remove Internet plug-ins and other add-ons" and the Support documents that follow "Learn more".

The problem persists both in Safe Mode as well as in MacOS Recovery mode.

The results are identical as in normal mode.

Safe mode took longer than 3 minutes to load.

After connecting to the router in question, I tried browsing the 2 websites that I have lost access to. The problem persisted.

Specifically, when trying to browse: www.zerohedge.com

The tab shows "504"

The message is: Gateway Timeout

When trying to peruse: www.stockcharts.com

The website loads

When entering ticker symbols I am unable to pull up the charts requested and it defaults to the standard DJIA chart

Using a different browser does not solve the problem

Connecting to alternative routers does indeed solve the problem
