Apple Watch Series 2 Randomly Turns Off

Hi,

A week ago, I got an Apple Watch Series 2, 42mm.

This is my first Apple Watch and I've been using it everyday without major problems, but sometimes the watch will just turn off by itself. This has happened twice and both times it happened a few minutes after logging a 45 minutes workout.

I'm aware that the watch will turn off if the battery is low, but both times the battery was charged to around 85% (I charge the watch overnight and workout in the morning). The watch turns on normally if I press the side button.

The watch software is up to date (watchOS 3.1) as well as my iPhone's (iOS 10.1, iPhone 6 64GB). I'm not sure if this is relevant, but my watch is the Japanese model with Felica.

Is anyone having the same problem? Any tips on how to fix this issue would be really appreciated!

Thanks.

Watch Series 2(Alum) 42MM (2nd gen), iOS 10.1

Hi

It is not normal for your Apple Watch to turn off unexpectedly.

Whilst I can't say why it is doing so, the following steps may help to prevent the issue from recurring:

Restart both your iPhone and your Apple Watch, turning both off together, then restarting your iPhone first:

Test by removing apps:

Unpair and re-pair your Apple Watch:

If the issue then still persists, I suggest that you contact Apple Support (mail-in service may be available, if required), make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider with a view to having it checked and, if recommended, serviced:

I've had my Series 2 AW for 4 months and it started randomly shutting down yesterday; I had to connect it to power to do a restart but then it did again. I completely erased the content and started again without restoring a back up. I shut down again and the battery drain has been high. The display as started acting up as well - when I raise my wrist there is a white box around the date (or other part of the display) as if I have touched it (I haven't), and when I enter my passcode the touch screen is very temperamental. The watch also get hot. I did another reset but the problems persists so I've had to stop using it. It's weird because I think it is software related but I haven't updated it recently. When I am setting up the watch the screen works fine, so I don't think that's a hardware fault. My worry is that when I take it into Apple they will say there is nothing wrong....

I have the series 2 42mm since June 2017. Today 10/15/2017, after an iPhone update I open the watch app on the phone and the phone has issues communicating with the watch. I look at my wrist and the watch is off. I turn it back on and things seem fine. Battery was at 20% on the watch.

This is the first time this happened. Keeping a close eye on the issue now that I see others have a problem.

I've had an Apple Watch since April 2015, and this happened once in a while in the first year, and then never happened again. This week I bought a Series 3 GPS model and it happened for the first time a few hours ago. Seems to be a software thing and it will probably be fixed in an update - I will be keeping an eye on it though since, I do have Apple Care for the next year.

I just bought my Apple Watch 2 a week ago and tonight it just randomly turned off. I'm starting to get peeved with Apple products. Every year the applications and devices get more glitchier than ever. You'd think that with all the billions of dollars of cash that Apple is sitting on they could pay for some decent programmers to button up the software. My iPhone 7 Plus has a battery life of 5 hours (after the last OS update) and now my brand new Apple Watch shuts off randomly. I've been a loyal Apple user for decades but the Android devices are starting to look a lot more attractive now.

Just wanted to add my frustration to the mix. Series 2 was shutting off before I could even last half an hour (on os3 and now 4). Factory reset many times. Didn’t add any apps. Didn’t do much of anything to trigger the shut down with failed reboot asking for it to be put on charger. Apple support guy said he would make them test it for six hours to reproduce the issue at the depot. They’re sending it back today after claiming there is no issue. Gaslighting all of us I guess, and for what?

I just had this issue occur this morning. Another similar issue happened to me 2 weeks ago, also. That time, the watch restarted itself. This morning, it shut off completely. However, both times I had the motion face (jellyfish) going, with the weather complication at the top, date in the middle, and calendar showing events at the bottom. And earlier this morning, my calendar complication froze, and I hadn't used the watch yet.

Last week, when no issue occurred, I had the motion face (again, jellyfish), date at the top, and weather at the bottom.

So I definitely believe it's a software issue, as far as the interactions between complications and the watch faces.

Hi,

I have exatly the same issue. New Watch Nike+ 42mm, 3Weeks old. Without any reason or repeatable cause the watch shuts down and restarts straight away. It happens up to once a day. Sometimes not even actively using the watch.

Just today the screen "froze" and I had to force a shutdown and restart.

I haven't found any solutions jet, but quite a few users experiencing this problem.

Hope it will be fixed quickly.

My wife just bought a series 2 on the 27th of Jan., and suddenly yesterday, the 31st, the watch randomly shut off on her. Completely dead. No low battery indication or anything. Couldn't power it up. My wife placed it on the charger for a few hours (even though she had charged it over night) and did not receive any notifications of charging, or the green clock. When I got home from work I tried a hard reset, but it didn't work. I put it on the charger, and while on the charger I tried a hard reset and that worked for some reason. I took it off the charger, confirmed the battery was at 100%, and then gave it to her, and within 30 min. the thing blacked out again. We left it on the charger over night, but in the morning it was still blacked out. The only way to power it on is by having it docked and doing a hard reset, and even then, it is only functional for 30 min. at most before blacking out again.

I called Apple Support today and they had us unpair and reset the watch to factory settings. They then ran diagnostics and said everything was fine. 30 minutes later the watch is dead again.

Calling them again and asking for a replacement.
